I can't list the number of times I've come on here on my phone when I'm not around my computer wanting to talk to my friends... but I have no idea if they are online or not! The idea I had in mind was sort of how facebook (since I always think of this as sort of a facebook for RPers xD) shows the friends of yours currently online/with their chat on. Maybe an expandable area so it isn't cluttered. Or, perhaps even something like DeviantArt has where it's a dropdown menu of everyone online. I don't think notifications or sounds or anything extra would really be needed... just an area to take a quick looksie if you wanna chat. Dunno if this had been suggested before... but there it is lol

Right now you can see who's online, if they chose to display their online status. It's right on their profile. I've no idea if Kim will ever make an actual list you can check for your friends, though.

There could be an option to opt out of it, just like majority of online lists do? That way for those who wish to remain invisible/anonymous could do just that.

This setting already exists (look under Privacy Settings), and any online list would most certainly incorporate it.

I've been thinking that when the friend management system gets revised, it might incorporate some kind of online indicator, so you could look at a list. It would never be the sort of thing that was on every page like facebook has, or at least would not be that way until some distant future when a whole bunch of the site gets rebuilt. Which has happened before, so anything is possible.
