Sterling was trying to be a good father, really, he was. But somehow when it came to spending father-son quality time together, fate was against him every time. Taking his six-year-old son, Hunter, out to ice cream had been a great idea. Up until the vampires showed up. Why vampires were even lurking around the ice cream stand in the first place was beyond Sterling's comprehension.
They'd been sitting on a bench, eating quietly--well, he had been eating quietly as Hunter garbled on and on about school and friends and the new puppy he'd made friends with from someone near the school, when he was suddenly aware that several strangers were lingering nearby. The most noticeable thing about them was that they weren't eating ice cream; and while they ditched the traditional trenchcoat, boots, and wide-rim hats for more general fare of jeans and long-sleeved shirts, Sterling hadn't forgotten the smell of vampire. There was a certain dried-blood smell which clung to them much as cigarette smoke did to a smoker. Sterling had been familiar with the smell in the past, and smelling it now, made his nose wrinkle up, distracting him from eating his icecream to turn and look at the strangers suddenly around him and Hunter.
"-and then during recess, I found a really cool bug that made Ginny freak out-" said Hunter, before Sterling interrupted him.
"Hunter, why don't we go walking and you can tell me more about this bug?" Sterling asked, standing up and offering his hand to Hunter. Hunter paused and looked at him and he could see in his big brown eyes the question of why. But Hunter was a good kid and switched his cone to his other hand to take Sterling's in his sticky one.
Of course the vampires had to attack when Sterling wasn't carrying anything on him. And they weren't so much vampires as they were cronies who worked for vampires. Thus why they were out in daylight while the vampires were safely tucked away. The attack came swiftly and Sterling only had time to throw a few punches, downing two of the men, before he realized Hunter was nowhere near him.
"Hunter!" he bellowed, giving chase after the two who had grabbed his son. Hunter was kicking and flailing and had smeared a good portion of his ice cream against one of his abductors, before a van pulled up from out of nowhere, a door sliding open to pick up the three of them, before driving off, leaving Sterling alone with two of the downed abductors. He whirled on the closest one, kneeling down to grab him by the collar and shake him. Anger didn't even begin to cover what he was feeling. "Who are you? Where did you take my son?!"

Kali had a worse fate than being capitive. She had been torchered and beaten. Only a few minuets ago, she had been tossed in, her head slamming into the concrete. Now she had a concusion as well asseveral bleeding slices in her back from a whip. With her long, flowing red hair, it almos didn't seem like she was bleeding. She didn't react at first to Hunter but slowly began to wake from her pained slumber. She shifted just enough to sit up slightly and looked over at the boy withher dark eyes , her kind face catching the faint firelight." A-are you okay?" Her voice was scratchy and full of agony but she stayed where she was, the darkness hiding her stained sgirt and dirt covered pants.

Hunter shivered and turned, pressing his back against the bars of his cell when he heard the voice. He searched the darkness with wide eyes, terrified already and about ready to wet himself.
"Who-who's there?" he asked, his voice catching in fear. He knew he should be brave, but that was a lot to ask of a seven-year-old who had been kidnapped and stuck in a jail. "What are you?" He hoped it wasn't another vampire. Or worse. Not that he was sure how much worse it could get. "You're not going to eat me are you?"
Sterling's prisoner laughed, or coughed rather, and spat at him. Sterling turned his head aside in time to avoid it, but his grip turned painful and the man beneath him winced.
"Tell me, or so help me, I will start dismembering you." He let go with one hand, reaching towards a back pocket with the other.
"W-wait!" the man beneath him cried out. "We were supposed to take him back with us to our master."
Sterling's grip tightened. "Who's your master? Why Hunter?"
The man's large eyes only looked fearful. "Our master has no name, none I 'eard of anyway. And he wants the kid to imprint on 'im or something."
Surprise crossed Sterling's face. "Imprint? Not to be fed on?"
A faint smile crossed the other man's face. "Not immediately, no."
Sterling growled and shook the man. "Where did you take him? Where is this master of yours holed up? Tell me!"
"What, you gonna storm the place?" the man coughed again, wincing as his head cracked against the ground. "No--some warehouse way out. Out beyond the city. Dirt road, gravel path, old abandoned prison, that's where we--the master--holes up. You'll never find it on your own."
Sterling sighed and brought his hand back, empty. "Very well then, you'll just have to come with me." He hauled the thinner man to his feet, easily and shoved him forward towards the car he'd left behind, his hand not once loosening its grip on the other man's jacket.

"They have a friend of mine there too. I can get you there faster than your..machine." She said, only pausing for a moment so she could remember what her friend Kali had told her.

"Are you okay? You look hurt," he offered, his young voice wavering. There wasn't a whole lot he could do; he didn't have any bandaids with him. He shivered; was the same thing going to happen to him?
Sterling spun, nearly losing his grip on his prisoner, when the woman suddenly addressed him. He kept the man between them, as if using him for a shield, though the man didn't seem to know or recognize this woman.
"Who are you? How would you get us there faster?" Sterling narrowed his eyes, suspicious, despite the pressing for time. But upon hearing that her own friend was taken, he relented a little.
"We can still take him, if your mode of transportation will allow for it. We might need some help negotiating past certain...barriers."

Hunter looked up at her in surprise. "Your jacket?" he hadn't even noticed the heap of fabric in the cell. And then he scrunched up his face. "We made a first aid kit not so long ago--but I didn't bring it with me." Next time he wouldn't leave home without it.
He trailed off and looked away before coming back to himself with a start. "How-how long have you been here?"

The man standing at the front of the cell grinned humorlessly, revealing a glint of fangs. "We'll see if we can jog that memory of yours a little better."
The two men entered the cell and made a pass for Hunter--who yelped and clung to Kali for steadiness. He didn't want to be taken by these guys! They scared him.

Hunter balled up as small as he could go--resorting to his usual method of avoiding danger. Be small and insignificant and impossible to reach. He could only hope that help was coming as he tried not to cry out of fear. As the two men tried to get closer to pry Emblem off of Hunter. They seized her arms, trying to force her to let go.
