So I’ve been trying to write a story that is at least unique. I’ve been trying to motivate myself to write something but to no avail. Every time I try to do it, I feel a sense of dread as if someone were telling me not to do it. That always prevented me from writing and publishing my story for some reason.

Similar to the writing comparison I mentioned before, being original is what I struggle with the most. I would be fascinated by a fictional work (usually an anime and the like) and try to make some sort of a spiritual successor to it. However, I would always hit a wall and just never bother to continue with my writing project like I have been doing. I don’t know but I feel like it’s impossible to create anything original because something has been done before.

So yeah, it’s frustrating. It’s hard to explain but that’s what I’ve been struggling with. If you have any suggestions on how I could overcome it, that would be great.
I think it's more important to focus on writing what you want, what inspires you, and not worry too much about whether or not it's original. So many things have been done before, but that doesn't mean they can't be done again, and besides, every person is inherently unique, so even if you write something similar to an existing work, it'll still have your own spin put on it just by being your work. So my advice is to try to worry less about that sort of thing - easier said than done, I know - and just write the things that interest you and make you happy :)
I guarantee you that anything you might come up with, someone out there could tell you about the similarities it has with this or that. The same is true of just about any story written since the invention of the printing press, and even things far older.

And that's okay.

Go ahead and start writing something you can get excited about. What makes it unique will follow as you develop it. :)

What??

You haven't started yet??

Come-on....

No I'm joking, but I can assure you, anything you write (if you not copy/paste) is original and only from you, ANYTHING!!
There will always be, like Zelphyr said, someone saying 'that's been done before'... No it isn't, it has NOT been done before.
And as Cryptic Stardust (love the name by the way) said, you're unique, so INSTANTLY original (even if you try to paint Mona Lisa again).

Yes, write, do yourself a pleasure and write, YOUR UNIQUE STORY, and show us the result of course <G>
I mean it

Yes really, I mean it (no joke there)
years ago, I was so obsessed with Star Wars to the point that everything original I tried to write felt like a weird ripoff, yet no other plot devices and archetypes felt even remotely appealing at the time- all this to say, I get your struggle. my advice? don't give a shit about it, and keep writing and expanding your stories and universe until you can call it your own. while I don't know what animes or books or whatever else you're into, I can guarentee you that the creator of that piece of media also drew inspiration from media that they consumed; granted, some creators are better at hiding that than others, but it's practically impossible to create something that's not in some vague way related to something else.

as time passes, you will figure out ways to customize your characters and stories, and will eventually stray further and further from the fandom source material until the link is barely there. hell, many of my major characters on this site could very well be described as "AliExpress version of [insert canon character here]", but over time, they began to become their own person. don't feel any shame for being inspired.

and, y'know, even if you don't manage to progress to the point where your creation bears no semblance to the source, to hell with it, y'know? creating is supposed to be fun anyway!

I just want to say thank you for all the tips I have been given. Glad I wasn’t the only one who thought of it. It helps with my sanity a bit (not to sound kind of weird but yeah). :)
