My hypothesis about the alien script has some shortcomings, though.

Because we have seen letters with 1 to 5 dots. And the crescent can be in 1 of 4 places. That is 20 combinations--not enough letters. Unless there can be no crescent at all, which adds an extra 5. So we're still short one.

And in the new comic there seems to be a crescent without a dot!
