This is The Boys, yes? I thought this was Soldier Boy's symbol specifically, but I don't know enough about it.

I am *very* into The Boys. 👀
To the people guessing names, the answer is likely not a person but an object or an event.
Scratching my head over this one. My brain is locked onto The Boys because of the symbol though so this is everything I guessed. I probably forgot some characters but.. it's been a while since I've watched no one look at me xD

Ryan
Sam
Luke Riordan / Golden Boy
Kenji Miyashiro

I feel like it has something to do with Sam.
Leaderless group: Episode: Guardians of Godolkin The news refers to Cate and Sam as "The new guardians of godolkin" but this could also be related to them fighting alongside the group of freed captives from The Woods?
Family stuff: He was unfairly cut off from his family. Twice.
Tests: This one is kind of difficult as many of the characters are considered test subjects!

But is being a test subject a meaningless test?
The answer has to do with a particular hero, but is not their name.
This could perhaps be a relevant scene

But I've seen a handful of things about 'tests' involving both the comics and show, so I don't know if this is the one (although I think it makes the most sense of the possibilities I've seen so far).
Edit to add: I did see something yesterday about a character who refused their hero title/position, because he didn't want to be cut off from his family. So perhaps he was, temporarily, part of the main group, and didn't like it?
I'm not sure how long the main squad is leaderless, though.

Not sure if this is relevant to the answer, but the Teenage Kix team is noted on the Fandom wiki the only team without a leader:
https://the-boys.fandom.com/wiki/Teenage_Kix
Take that with a grain of salt, because one of the members listed (Big Game) has a line on his page about being their leader at some point:
https://the-boys.fandom.com/wiki/Big_Game
Other than A-Train and Mesmer, none of the other male members have much on their pages. From what I can tell, neither A-Train nor Mesmer gets separated from their family.
Gonna second Mina's mention of the Guardians of Godolkin / Sam, although I am scared to read more in case of spoilers for Gen V S2 q.q

Hint: His meaningless test happens in Season One of the TV show.

This helps a ton, thank you!
You've got 55 minutes of clear path to work on this one, gang!

Hint: The test requires a hand shake
This makes me think of Mesmer, a part of Teenage Kix, who was cut off from his family and needed physical touch to use his mind-reading abilities, often choosing a hand clasp or handshake. The only "test" I can picture is him initially shaking MM's hand, which had a purpose, but ultimately no point. I'm quickly watching through his scenes to see what else I can gather. Hmm..if its not a name..
Putting all the clues together for easy reference:
Once part of a leaderless group
Cut off from his family
A meaningless test
The answer has to do with a particular hero, but is not their name.
His meaningless test happens in Season One of the TV show.
The test requires a hand shake

Congrats on solving this symbol! The answer was "867".
For those of you wondering how this answer could be arrived at, here's a quick explanation.
In the show The Boys, the washed up "Supe" Mesmer was once a part of Teenage Kix, the only super hero team put together by Vought that has no official leader. We first see him as an adult signing autographs for fans at a convention. Many of the fans ask him to use his super power to read their minds to test him. We see one such test where the query is "What number am I thinking of?" and Mesmer responds, correctly, "867"
We learn that Mesmer has an ex wife and a daughter, who are uninterested in having him in their lives any longer.
