Angelcakes is a thing now. Great! From the lengthy, sappy, vomit-worthy pet names lovers has to pick from he got landed with Angelcakes. It was better than Muffin, he supposed. The kiss with Kyria was totally worth whatever ridicule he would have to endure. It was the kind of kiss that made him believe that being banished to Earth wasn’t purgatory anymore. He would have been content just staying in this moment the rest of the day, but Maddox’s whistle turned his head. It was probably the only thing that would turn his head.
Maddox and his new friend were in the river and seemed to be racing to the other side – the side with the slide. The slide had been his idea. That figures. Cassiel turned to Kyria, “Did you want to go down the slide or…” he rubbed his hands together with a sly look on his face, “there is always the rope swing.” Cassiel didn’t know if joining Maddox and his friend was the wisest thing. Maybe they could give them some space to do whatever it is they were going to do.
The sun was climbing high in the sky. It was easily afternoon, and food was something they would need to be thinking about soon. Cassiel had been out by the river for several hours now. He should probably go onshore and drink some water, too. The day was hot though the water was cold. He wasn’t in danger of overheating but keeping oneself hydrated and being able to keep up with the fun.
He gave Kyria an enquiring look. “Slide or swing? And then I am going to go hang out under the canopy to get something to drink, maybe think about some food for us.” He wasn’t telling her what they were going to go, only what he was going to do. Kyria was welcome to go join the pair at the slide without him if she wished. She was also welcome to stay in the river while he went and got something to drink and eat.

Kyria’s dark hair floated like silk around her shoulders as she drifted closer, still basking in the warmth of the kiss they’d just shared. The grin she wore now was less mischievous and more softly content, the kind that only bloomed when the world felt just right for a heartbeat or two.
Cassiel’s voice tugged her attention, and she blinked at him lazily, as if she’d only just returned from a dream. He was rubbing his hands together, throwing out options like a proper instigator. “You say rope swing like it’s not the obvious choice,” she teased, the sparkle returning to her gaze. “Come on, Angelcakes. If we’re going to make memories, let’s make ones that involve a little flying and a lot of screaming.”
She gave his shoulder a playful nudge with hers, then began wading toward the bend in the river where the rope swing hung from the limb of a gnarled cypress tree. Her grin tilted sly. “Besides, if we die, it’s a very poetic way to go. Wings tangled midair. Lovebirds crash and burn. Instant legend.”
But then he added the part about food and hydration, and her expression softened again. She could hear the care under the casual words. That was how Cassiel sometimes worked. He was often tenderness wrapped in practicality.
“Rope swing first. Then you can drag me to shade and ply me with snacks like the princess I clearly am.”
She winked at him and then reached for his hand under the water, lacing her fingers through his. Not pulling him anywhere. Just being near.
“Let them have their slide. I’ve got my wings.”

I had no idea this was part of the same river system. It’s heartbreaking to think what’s happening, and I hope all those missing people are found and returned safely.
My heart goes out to all the families, friends and I pray for anyone still feeling the fear and fallout from this. I think shutting this down was necessary, and I absolutely respect the decision to do so.
