First time I've participated in one of these, but the three points I'm using are
1) They are humanoid, but not human (fantasy, animal and/or robotic features)
2) They work aboard a ship (any kind of ship; air, space, sea or other)
3) They have a hidden side

My idea, getting into fantasy science-fiction, based on Avatar.
A crew lands with their Vessel on another planet, they look as if they were born on that planet, the shape can be of any kind, but are likely to have specific features of that kind (like my little doe, humanoid deer with the specific abilities of cervidae species like increased eyesight and hearing ability), the species can be made up or existing earthy animals. Maybe big felines that have humanoid anthro form (up to you if you invent a new species or take existing). They are taken for that long lost explorers that went to look for other planets.
But this crew, seemingly native to the planet are only clones or 'avatars' of that species. The real crew found that abandoned ship and all inside, like genetic signature of the natives and generated these clones they can control by remote or through control of the brain (personality transfer).
You can make them evil and conquerors or simple explorers that need those clones to survive (their species being endangered through genetic manipulation, for example).

If you didn’t wanna just recreate Avatar or Among Us, here’s another idea. This is not personally something I would RP, but you’re welcome to any part of it you may like.
The long-range skyship that rides the high jet streams between floating cities. It’s half-sailing vessel, half-fusion engine, with sails that shimmer like dragonfly wings and a crew of traders, and sky-scavengers, but that crew is not what they seem. Appearing in either human form, or animal form, they are actually a fox-like creature (and all the attributes), but instead of a bushy tail, they have tails of sharpened quills.
What’s the secret? Well, the secret to these seemingly adorable people is that….by night, they are actually deadly assassins.

I quite like the ideas from Fantax and TheCaffeineQueen. Merging the ideas somewhat, they could be part of the crew of a ship and resemble the other members of the crew. They work alongside the other crew on a trading vessel by day, but sneak out during the night when the ship is docked and most of the crew is asleep. While outside the ship they steal (and maybe also murder) what they want, hiding in the ship if they're found out

Based on what you said, there can be two approaches for this:
As for the hidden side, it can be about their personalities like being depressed inside, gothically sad, and looking forward for some to see their inner beauty, thus it can be a good thing for romance aspect of the story
--- Science fiction, which can be one of these:
Imagine they live on a plate whose climate conditions are exceedingly bad, so they began experimenting with a kind of living metal organism, but so many of the test subjects rust and die. Only your character's body can alter the living metal, and it alters it so that parts of your body become living metal and give you special abilities.
--- This road is classic and you can choose via different and countless space beings, such as a race of women whose lower torso has the shape of an octopus!
