I'm looking for a good mmorpg to play that's free to play and not pay to win.

For example here is stuff in the cash shop that I would be ok with:

Cosmentic items

Mounts

Convenience items like extra storage space, teleports etc.

Exp Boosts and other none game breaking boosts.

Gear as long as you can earn equivalent gear in game.

Things I wouldn't be ok with:

Gear that's better then anything you can get in game.

Cosmetic items that offer a buff.

Stat potions

Items you have to buy if you want to upgrade your gear without risking it being destroyed and losing everything. I don't mind if the mats are lost, but I don't what my 9 star gear destroyed trying to upgrade it to 10 stars and only having like a 5% chance of it working unless I use the cash shop.

Other obvious pay to win things like locked equipment slots etc.

Games I have played: ESO, STWOR, Rift, Guild Wars 2, Neverwinter, Lotro

I liked guild wars save for the locked auction since what else am I going to spend my gold on?

Was disappointed by the 2nd to last expanion of star wars and I was a subcriber, but I don't see myself subscribing again.

Just got bored of ESO, might come back to it later.

I have spent cash on games before, but I'm unlikely to do so if I'm just playing by myself. I also really prefer fantasy games.

So any suggestions?
TERA is good if you like more fluid combat. It went free sort of recently, and the early game was cut down to a minimum in difficulty and time needed to level up. Overall, it's very fun, very pretty, and feels like a mix between an action game and the standard MMORPG experience.

Other than that I'd check out the selection of MMOs with good reviews on Steam.
LaTale is a pretty good 2D side scroller. The only problem I have with is is that you can level up really quickly (like to 100 in a day or two) and the storyline is pretty bland.

You don't have to stick to the storyline all the time, there are some side quests you can do for extra cash and xp.
Warframe is pretty good but its not like WoW or anything where its sandbox and you run around with tonnes of players or anything but basically I like to think of it as a Runescape dungeon crawler with a max party of 4 but in a scifi setting with space ninjas. Theres a lot more to it but if you are interested check it out.

@CloudDragon, I might have to check out Tera. Thanks for the tip.

@InsaneShadow, Not all that interested in 2d games like that.

@Thehook16 Not interested in sci-fi for the most part.
BelovedDreamwalker

Vindictus
Mabinogi
Dragon Nest

@BelovedDreamwalker

Vindictus has cosmetic items that offer stats. I already said I was not ok with that.

Mabinogi has the buy protection items or risk losing your gear trying to upgrade.

Dragon Nest has the same cosmetic buff thing.
I play GW2 too!
Some other games you might enjoy (that I've played) are...

EQ2 - While the later updates killed the game, Day Break bought it and reverted it back to its glory days. If you can look past the money grubbing company that owns it, it'll be a jolly good time.

Ark Age- You could play this without paying for a membership, but you are severely limited by it. Memberships are $15/month but can be bought with in-game currency for a free month (these are bought with cash by other players). I really like the housing and trade systems in play here. Pirates and highwaymen are as large a threat as the enemy faction when you have valuables to transport. This was the last MMORPG that I played, and have a little extra gold I can spare to get you started if you are on my server.

Trove- I don't do dedicated playing on this. Usually I just jump on every now and then to derp around and fly off some cliff to fight a boss. This is a block-style game that is by the same company that made Rift. It has random spawning dungeons and some decent house building. There are things you can buy, but I never have and I do just fine.

Pirates Online- Used to be Pirates of the Caribean Online, this game was one of my absolute favorites, and I guarantee you I'll be playing it again when it is back. I'm not sure on the release date, as I haven't looked it up yet, but this used to be a well-designed MMORPG based on the renowned Disney movie series. My personal favorite aspect was naval battles. In fact, that was just about all my brother and I did on that game. We could sink any ship... Except the ones we needed to board. A level seven cannot take out five level 20s. I speak from personal experience. (I just found out after typing that it will be a bit before this game comes out. Pity.)

That's all I can think of right now. If I remember any others I'll be sure to let you know.
Maybe try Wakfu/Dofus or Wild Star? And No Man's Sky is coming out soon as well.

Last I heard it was having some multiplayer trouble. I'm by sure if it'll suffice as an MMORPG right now... But boy am I hyped for that game!

I played that too with my dad. Sad that it shut down, and I just can't wait to play again.

Now, an MMORPG that I've been playing lately is Black Desert Online. Not free to play, but amazingly awesome. It has a pearl shop (that you buy with real money) to get stuff, and the cosmetic stuff has slight buffs. (Recently they released an update that let's you sell a set amount of pearl items on the in game marketplace that you use in game money for.) It also has a loyalty shop that you can buy stuff from. Loyalties are earned by logging in every day. 10/10 would recommend this game to anyone.
Star-Noble

If you're fine with a monthly subscription, you should check out Final Fantasy XIV. It's very good, cash shop is purely cosmetic for outfits, name changes, race changes(fantasia), recolored mounts and a few mini-pets. You can get a free trial to play the game up till Lv15-20 and I think it lasts for.. two weeks? I'm not sure. I've been on there since launch and it's a fantastic game.
I have looked for the same thing Katia, and it seems very hard to find. There are so many free tonplay games out there... But it seems all of them have an aspect of pay to play unfortunately.

Tera (as mentioned) seemed good the time I tried it but I never played very far simply because I didn't have the time at that point.

I know you said you didn't like sci-fi so TOR is kind of out... LOTRO is kind of decent... Note the kind of. Don't get me wrong it's a great game but paying defenitely makes it much easier to progress. It's been a while since I played but last I did, to it's credit, there was nothing money could buy that time couldn't gain that was a real "advancement" in the game. As I said it just made advancement easier.
