Got tipped off to this by a radio DJ friend on All Things the other day, and found a better youtube vid that doesn't need to be linked.

An early recording of 'The Chain' by Stevie Nicks. it is nothing like the Fleetwood Mac album track other than the same chorus line.

This Lord of the Rings movie scene edit to Deep Purple's song Soldier of Fortune is quite good I think.

Listening to some Yardbirds. Chris Dreja passed away today. :(

Chris Dreja (Rhythm guitarist on the far left in this video) was one of the teenage founding members of the Yardbirds in 1963 along with Keith Relf (lead singer), Anthony 'Top' Topham (lead Guitar), Paul Samwell Smith (bass) and Dave Carty (drums). Eric Clapton replaced Topham shortly before they recorded their first songs. This video has Jeff Beck playing lead as Eric Clapton didn't like the 'pop radio hit' direction the band was going and left to join John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in 1965.

Chris was in the band throughout its life. They had some tumultuous times, and despite being one of the original 'big' 'British Invasion' bands of 1964, they failed to have the big success of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Animals, and The Who. By 1966, frustrations among the members culminated when the bass player Paul Samwell Smith had enough and stormed off the stage after playing to a rowdy crowd at Oxford in England. They had more live gigs booked, and Jeff Beck asked his friend Jimmy Page if he could stand in as bassist until Paul got his head together. When it became clear that Paul wasn't coming back, Jimmy Page officially joined the band on bass, and Chris Dreja told him he was a much better guitarist then he ever would be, so they gradually changed positions over several live shows. The Yardbirds then had two power lead guitarists who traded riffs and played rhythm when the other stepped forward.

Chris kept the low end Rhythm tight with his friend Dave Carty on drums, but Jeff Beck was also getting frustrated. He soon left the band after the movie 'Blow Up' was finished to go solo with Rod Stewart as lead singer, and The Yardbirds trooped on until 1968, having continued moderate success.

When the band called it quits in May 1968, Jimmy Page and the latest band manager Peter Grant were left holding the bag. Jimmy Page asked Chris Dreja if he would stay on as bassist, but he decided to step away from music to concentrate on his acting, photography, and artwork. His declining to continue opened the way for John Paul Jones to join Jimmy, Robert Plant, and John Bonham as 'The New Yardbirds' to fulfill previously booked shows in Sweden. They then changed their name to Led Zeppelin, and Chris took several of their promo photos and their first album back cover photos of the band members.

I started talking about Chris, but ended up talking Yardbirds. . .
