"That kind of weapon is just like the type I see in RPG games... I'm not an expert, But I've played enough to recongize one."

He was sitting with his son coloring in a coloring book with him.

Sue nodded, taking out her cigar to blow out a puff. "I'd like to meet this Russ, he sounds badass."

I admire your choice of camouflage and the handgun is a prudent choice, Sue for the close quarters of the trench if nothing more powerful or convenient suits however your bright orange fursuit would have you promptly, as they say, swiss'd or you would meet your end while an FPV closes in for a candid.

Sue smiled, scoffing a little. "I don't go anywhere without my fox. Even if he sticks out, he's a part of me. Buuut I make up for it with mad skills."
She looked at Sue as she drank some recaf. "Interesting get up..." was what she said to Sue as she smiled a little. She sat there looking at Sue smoke a cigar as she remembered smoking at one point. "I would ask for a cigar, but I don't smoke anymore," she told Sue as she crossed her legs in a certain fashion.
" Well i suppose some scorned individuals may look upon it as a weapon but frankly I look upon it as more of an instrument, chainswords are rather ubiquitous in our universe. This one however is completely harmless, I was revving it up to test for function really, due for maintenance it would seem, I'll have them take a look at it or better yet...

He looked at Apollo intently and nodded

There you go my boy, knock yourself out... just needs some gas in it, otherwise you can go give it a spin with your friends, a fun activity for the whole family... why in my younger days I could juggle three of them... bahah... the look on those heretics faces when they saw that, I should have had a servo-skull take pictures... wasn't much of a face left on them afterwards... hrn... anyhow enjoy yourself... ehrm... Apollo is it ?

He added with a jovial laugh, issuing a friendly smack to the Aeldari's shoulder after gifting him the chainsword.

Aleksandr noted Ami sipping some recaf and made his way over, pouring himself some recaf all the same as he settled.

" Sister Arpatia, what news of the front? any recent deployments on part of the Sororitas the Guard could lend aid in? perhaps artillery, I got a great deal on Basilisk cannons on boxing day and I've been meaning to take them for a spin "
A popular trope has been dismissive of the chainsword as a plausible weapon, and while I would never advocate for it being realistic, 40k being one of the less realism focused sci-fi universes that is, there are examples of vaguely similar weapons in human history. And yes I am aware of the Skallagrim and countless other youtube videos dissing the chainsword as well, ofcourse it's not realistic, it's a made up weapon in a universe with minimal realism.

Polynesian sharktooth club and macahuitl being an example;

My own take for it is that it is more of a utility tool pressed into combat for terrifying effect and definitely has its ceremonial utility as well, with it being more common in siege focused warfare. Because melee is so common in 40k, the chainsword might serve as more of a parrying tool akin to the swordbreaker dagger pictured below, catching the enemies weapon and preventing a follow up strike, which could be useful against an enemy such as a bloodletter, the sword being it's main armament, could be caught, buying time for it to be dispatched with a bolter round.

I mostly just use it because the chainsword is universe specific, sort of like Halo's iconic energy sword and I think it looks cool.

Just trivia and general talk, not argumentative.
Apollo Meyer (played by Mixpixi)

Apollo was even more confused to be GIVEN the chainsword, staring at it with the same expression from earlier.

“So.. if a chunk of metal or dense bone gets stuck in-between the teeth, do you have to pause using it and unclog it? What if foreign substances seep into the inner-workings and dry up, would you have to pause and oil it? If the chain dulls do you have to replace it? What if the engine runs out of gas in the middle of battle? Are you just, screwed?”

His brow furrowed as he inspected it, “the maintenance for this thing has gotta be absurd. Do you just-“

He paused, a memory from his ‘prior life’ resurfacing. Teens huddled around a table with character sheets and dice. The one in charge would briefly explain the ‘rule of cool’.

Apollo clenched his teeth. Oh. He was now almost certain this man’s universe had more regard for said ‘rule of cool’ than how this weaponry would logically work. Maybe things just defied the laws of logic there.

“Nevermind. Forget everything I said. You can have your.. chain-sword back.”
Because clearly a shapeshifting elf alien with memories of a past life adhered perfectly to the laws of logic. In truth nothing in this place was logical.

The chainsword given to Apollo was worn and deactivated essentially nothing more than a piece of garbage, which is why Aleksandr gave it to him to begin with. The exchange had long since ended leaving Apollo with his questions.

"We do need some ground and air aid. Me and Athene will lead the way to victory. And it would be a thrill to use a Basilisk cannon. Something fun for us Sisters."

She eyed the lord general as she kept drinking the recaf.

"And the front? Nothing of us Sororitas could handle, Lord General. But any aid would suffice."
" Excellent, good show. My commendations to the Sister Superior, her actions were pivotal to the success at Daimiel. I suppose you've gotten your rank and squadron in place, the bolter is certainly less forgiving than a lasgun but all the more effective. I can arrange transfer of a Basilisk to your armor alongside artillery commanders for further drilling though I suppose you will bring a fair knowledge of such from serving with a squadron that emphasized indirect fire support "

The Lord General nodded before taking a seat, easing back with some scotch and a smoking pipe.
"Good. She is definitely a hero in my book. She did save me from death after all. And my.." she said as she held up her heavy bolter in the air with it feeding to her power pack, she grinned and finished, "bolter definitely is far more superior than that of a lasgun. I couldn't imagine using a lasgun again. I do still use the plasma pistol. Only up close if need be. And good...One of those would serve us well. And it wouldn't hurt having commanders with us as we take the fight to the heretics." She was about to respond about the squadron part, but that was history.

She sat there with him as she drank more of the recaf. "Mathius, some scotch over here please?" she asked as she looked at the glass of scotch that Lord General Aleksandr had in front of him. She didn't smoke, but that was fine with her. She had given it up after joining the order. It was no longer something she desired.
"I see you people are still keen on rejecting the "no weapons" rule..."

"What? This weapon?" she said as she pointed to her bolter to Lockon.
"Don't point that at me. Unlike other people, I'm not afraid to shoot back."
"If I was pointing it at you...you would be gone before you let off anything you had."
"Let's not test that theory, now. I can draw fine. Though, unlike some of us, I actually respect the rules around here."
