The Palace apartment complex, located in a small, sleepy, Florida town.

Ha, some “palace”. In reality, its just a some-what grungy, salmon colored, two story building in an L shape. There’s a gated pool area out front in the parking lot, though it usually didn’t look too inviting... or sanitary. Mostly just home to soggy debris, and sometimes an unmatched sock.

The landlord, a thin, short, balding man named Tony was more or less... fine? He was a very lax man, or more so just uncaring. Which is neat in some senses, like he couldn’t care less whether you smoked inside, whether you had a pet, or a petting zoo, or what went down in your apartment- as long as he didn’t have to pay for anything. In other senses, it could take months and many reminders for him to get your sink fixed, or your locks changed. Tony is a little bit sleazy, a little too friendly at times, but overall harmless.

Life in The Palace isn’t too bad. There are only a handful of neighbors that should be avoided for the most part; a few cranky, senile old geezers just hollering at the younger generation and waiting around to die, a good amount of drug users and tweakers, the healthy amount of creeps, and just a few of those iconic Nosy Neighbors.

Here at The Palace, you can be lulled to sleep every night by the sounds of police sirens, shouting in the room above, people chattering outside to god knows who, maybe no one, and of course, the neighbor across the lot’s heavy metal music reverberating through the floors and walls.
Amenities include an on site, communal laundry room, the pool, aanndd that’s about it...

Home sweet home here at The Palace!

It was early evening, and Rowen was outside her ground level apartment room, near the staircase leading to the second story. She was perched contently on a white, plastic yard chair, puffing away on a cigarette. The strongly fumed smoke drifted lazily up Rowen's dramatically featured face before disappearing into the humid night’s air.

Nearly 8 o’clock and still so god damned hot, She thought, idly fanning herself with her left hand, as her right nursed the cigarette at her plump, pillowy, chapped lips. Perspiration clung to her pale skin, making her look dewy and fresh, some how. Her blonde hair was tied messily back into a bun with a few free strands framing her striking face. She wore a black wife-beater tank top, and DIYed jean shorts, her feet resting on top of a pair of cheap, black flip flops.

Reaching down, she swiped up the beer bottle that was sitting beside the front chair leg on the left side, bringing it to her lips and taking a thirsty chug, trying to fight off the unrelenting heat.

It was a quiet night, everything seemed still and sleepy, as per usual in this town. The only sounds that disturbed the evening were the chitter chatter of noisy bugs, some loud conversation upstairs somewhere, and the blaring infomercials from her senile neighbors TV.

Ah, living the dream. She thought sarcastically, while scratching at her left breast near her armpit, unbashfully. Her spirits lifted when she heard the tell-tale, creaking sound of an apartment door opening. Her head jerked to the right, where she spotted her neighbor that lived a few doors down. He was an older man, probably in his 60s, with a thick mustache and watery, blue eyes.

“Rick!” She hollered through a wild grin to get his attention. “Ayye pops! Ya ready to take me up on that sugar daddy offer yet?” She teased, pressing her plump lips together and making juicy kissing motions at him. He said nothing, just gathered his mail and shuffled awkwardly back inside. Rowen had never heard that man speak before, but by god she would get him to.

She listened to his door creak shut and proceeded with a string of raspy, sultry laughter that sounded like the purr of a wild cat.
Quintus (played by Deathmarch419)

Quintus turned of his car and sat still for a minute. The job had been a hard one, tracking down a serial killer discretely and "eliminating" him without letting anyone know would be. He had originally thought of joining the police force or military but ran into many complications. The Force was sub-par to what he was used to, laced with corruption, bureaucracy, and all that other fun stuff. The military though not a bad option presented to many hurdles, to many chances for his true identity to be discovered. If the knowledge that he was from a different time and universe got out, the consequences could be devastating, even deadly. So he lived a double life, err, triple life. Private Investigator by day, professional assassin by night, so to speak.

Getting out of the car he looked at the apartment complex, a dingy run down place, noisy, and often smelled. But it was quiet, the owner never asked questions and that made it home.

As he gathered up his bag and equipment he made his way up to the 2nd floor, past drugged out teens, past Gran; a sweet old lady who'd vouched for him when he moved in and finally around the corner past the resident drug dealers base of operations to stand in front of his own little spot in 'heaven'. Opening the door he placed his bags down to the side and fell onto his couch.

"Hard to believe its been almost a year" he said out loud as he stared at the horizon, enjoying the sun as it slowly began to set.

Vera looked up at the window, staring at the sunset through the window. It was boring around here, real boring. Maybe it was the teen hormones talking to her. The teen took another bite of her homemade ham and cheese sandwich. Damn, that's good. She glanced to the floor near her.

Laying down on the floor next to Vera, was her Revenant friend, Mortimus. Vera always thought of him to be like the dog she always wanted, but never got. Though, he could talk, which was a plus.

She continued laying lazily on the couch before glancing down at the ghostly beast.

"You think it's too late to go for a walk?" Vera asked him. Mortimus shifted his position on the floor.

"Mm. I do not see the harm in it." The ghost replied, turning himself to stand up. Vera got up, and slipped on her sneakers and headed out the door.

With that, the two left the safety of their apartment and into the hallway. Neighbor to Vera, was Mr. Williams. Vera remembered that he once said that he was an English teacher once. She stared at his door for what seemed like the longest time, then, she moved her attention to the other doors.

"We just moved here. But it seems like we've lived here all our lives. Apartments are weird like that." Vera muttered.

(Reminder that the complex is only 2 stories tall.)

Rowen rocked back slightly in the cheap, plastic lawn chair she was often seen reclining in, smoking away at cigarettes like she was aiming to be a professional chimney.

What a lame ass night. Usually there was some sort of commotion to watch, like police raids or arrests, screaming matches between neighbors or spouses, or sometimes drugged out residents making fools of themselves out in the parking lot. But tonight, it was mostly just quiet stillness. It was kind of eerie actually, nothing going on around The Palace was more suspicious than not.

Rowen watched through half lidded, big, round eyes as the man left his car and headed up the stairs past her. He’d been here longer than Rowen, but Rowen had never interacted with him before. His name was like... Quinn? Quan? Ha, she didn’t know. She felt that he mostly just kept to himself.

Bored, she prodded at some small pebbles with her bare toe. After a moment of this, she tipped her head against the back rest of the white lawn chair and groaned dramatically. She knew if she went inside now, she’d end up watching shitty tv shows and drinking herself to sleep by nine o’clock.

“C’mon guys!” She hollered to the mostly empty complex lot in front of her. “No drama? No parties tonight?” She taunted, to no one.

Gaaah, she thought, stubbing out her cigarette on the arm rest of the plastic chair, leaving burned ash residue for obviously not the first time.
Might have to go check out the bar scene tonight, see if there’s any trouble stirrin’.

Rowen was quite a social butterfly, she didn’t do the best by her lonesome. She grew too bored and too lost in her own mind, which is a dangerous place to become lost. She preferred to be in loud, crowded places with lots of people. She loved interacting with people. Learning their buttons, and pushing them, flirting, stirring up trouble. Rowen was a fool, and it’s a fools job to keep people entertained. A fool without people to entertain is just a plain idiot.

Vera had finally snapped out of her thoughts. She sighed, then turned away and headed down the somewhat creaky stairway. Yeesh, every time she went up or down this thing, she felt like it was about to give out from under her.

After going down the first flight, it hit her; the stinging smell of cigarette smoke. Vera hated that smell. Too many bad memories of her dad smoking up a storm in her old house. How the teen didn't get lung cancer, was a miracle. She continued down the flight before finding the source of the stench.

Vera turned her head to find a young woman, laying in a really cheap looking lawn chair. She stared at her for a moment or two.

Why the hell does she have to be my neighbor? The teen wondered.

After a moment or two, Mortimus caught up with Vera. He halted and followed her gaze to the lady in the chair. His head tilted to the side in mild confusion.

"What appears to be the problem?" The ghost inquired.

"....Just avoid eye contact Morty. Avoid eye contact." Vera muttered, stepping away slowly, hoping she wouldn't be addressed.
Quintus (played by Deathmarch419)

(edited it to 2nd story)

“C’mon guys!” "No drama? No parties tonight?” A voice yelled waking Quintus up. It was always like that around these parts, he'd grown used to it, but it certainly was an annoyance. The voice belonged to a girl he'd often seen but never talked to. According to gran she was a troublemaker, constantly ruffling feathers, but for what reason she wasn't sure, surprising because gran seemed to know everything.

Feeling a bit adventurous he chuckled before opening his window and making his way to the balcony.

Looking down at the girl he yelled out "Didn't you see the notice? Landlords making renovations so we all have to move out for a few weeks, you should talk to him about it."

He regretted it as soon as he said it, that much he could tell, but a voice in the back of his head was telling him it was about time. Everywhere he had lived after the war it was the same deal. Keep a low profile, nod to the neighbors and keep to himself, the only difference here had been Gran and even she had been telling him to socialize more. 'It's for your own good' he thought, 'besides, this might be entertaining'

Rowen watched through those alluring eyes of hers as a green haired teen picked her way down the rickety staircase towards her. The air chilled and a shiver ran down Rowen’s spine, but was very welcomed in the humid heat.

The teen was mumbling something to herself, and Rowen being Rowen, couldn’t help but prod. “Didnt catch that, Doll. Mind repeating?” She instigated, before being interrupted by the sound of a male yelling from above.

She tipped her head all the way back to rest on the reclined back of the lawn chair, looking up at the face of the man she’d seen recently arriving home. So he wasn’t a mute like Rick! Interesting.
Her foxy smirk curled on her plump lips as she looked up at the man. “Good try! But in the case of us needing to find somewhere else to stay, Tony would’a been at my door first, offering me his couch.”

Tony, the landlord, was a sleaze, and attempted pitiful pickup lines whenever he and Rowen interacted, but he was rather mild compared to most of the guys Rowen had run ins with.

“Don’t think I’ve ever heard your voice before, Stranger.” She called up to him. “Didn’t know if ya had one or not.”
Vera Crawfield (played by koobler)

Vera froze as soon as she was addressed. Why did she mumble in front of her?

But, by some miracle of God, she was saved by a man calling down to the lady in the chair from a blacony up above. They had seemed to have started to make conversation. Great. Now it's time to make her hasty escape to get on that nice walk. Though it was blazing hot outside, Vera was in possession of a walking, talking air conditioner. The teen took a moment and glanced at her ghostly friend, who was watching the lady, tail wagging.

Ah, the perks of being Vera Crawfield. But there are also cons of being her. One was being the neighbor of a smoker. Maybe she could get her dad to arrest her, that would be pretty funny. Vera smirked at the thought.

Vera soon gestured to Mortimus. The ghost looked to her for a moment, then trotted to the teen. Quickly, Vera went down the other flight of stairs, Mortimus following close behind.
Quintus (played by Deathmarch419)

'Huh, guess I'm not the only attentive one here' Quintus thought to himself, He grinned at her response before jokingly yelling down, "well if you were that curious you coulda just asked! and by the way I wouldn't lean that far back, these chairs have a tendency to break"
'This isn't as hard as I thought' Quintus thought to himself. It'd been so long since he'd done small talk he kinda was starting to think he was going mute. Quintus' thoughts were broken by a cracking sound, 'they might not break so easily, but they do sound like they will'
Seeing as he had nothing else planned for the night he figured he'd commit to this small talk thing.

"...Don't think I've caught your name, stranger" he yelled down again.

While a shouting conversation divided by a building level didn’t suit some people, Rowen was pleasantly content. Better this than left alone in the turmoil of her own mind and memories. Without thinking, she reached with her right hand to brush over the somewhat raised, black skin on her left wrist where the initials A. J. M. were inked just under her palm. Much better...

She watched through narrowed eyes as the teen with her scrunched up nose made her slippery get away, taking the cold air with her much to Rowen’s dismay. I’ll get you later...she thought, following after the younger girl with her eyes. Teenagers were rather fun to mess around with, so full of hormones and energy. Like little ticking time bombs, so cute.

Prompted by the threatening cracking of the cheap chair, she leaned forward a little, her head tipping back to peer up at the black haired man again.

“I’m Rowen,” She introduced with a playful grin. “What’s yours?”
Vera Crawfield (played by koobler)

Once Vera made her way outside the complex, she started coughing. The smoke almost killed her lungs. Went she got back from her walk, she would need a shower, so she wouldn't smell like an ash tray. After taking a moment to compose herself, she sighed.

"Man, I hate cigs. They're disgusting." Vera mumbled, glancing around.

Mortimus snorted. "You would not be so keen on cigars from my past life, then."

"Don't even get me started." Vera replied, leaving the complex property and making her way down the street. She would be gone for maybe 15 minutes or so.
a teen about the age of 16 road up to the apartments on his motorcycle, he got off and pulled off his helmet shaking his bright red hair. ~ ill be glad once I win enough money to leave this dump~ he thought as he looked around and headed to his room. He passed some people who seemed to be talking but Brian had already put on his headphones and was listening to some loud music. Getting to his door he unlocked the door and walked inside, a large Germen Sheppard greeted him with a soft bark.
Quintus (played by Deathmarch419)

“I’m Rowen,” She introduced with a playful grin. “What’s yours?” she responded
"Quintus" He replied, noticing that she unintentionally listened to his advice, he smiled, 'got ya' he thought to himself.
Going back inside for a moment he grabbed two of his good beers and walked back to the balcony before continuing, "mind if I come down?" before waving the beer so she could see it. 'just like we used to do back on shore leave, nice and easy'.
Her smile he had to admit was charming, and she seemed friendly enough, 'wow I might just make a friend' he thought sarcastically.
watching as a motorcycle rolled up to the complex Quintus recognized the resident 'motorcycle enthusiast', when he'd first seen the kid he had to admit he was confused as to why he was living in such a place, but then again, one could ask him the same thing, so he never pushed it, just offered the occasional nod.

Rowen watched the familiar boy on his motorcycle, another familiar face without a name to her. She watched idly as he made his way into his little home.

Then, she turned her pale green gaze back to Quintus and his wonderful offers. “Ah, can’t ever say no to a drink.” She purred, gesturing with a wave of her hand for him to join her.

Ah, the evening was looking up. Good beers with a companion and conversation were much better than wrestling memories of the past and drinking alone into a comatose sleep.

“So, Quintus,” She began as he came to join her. “What do ya do for a living? Ya know, to afford living in such a five star abode as The Palace.” She joked, good heartily as she rose from her seat to retrieve another of the cheap, white lawn chairs from where they were stored underneath the staircase.
Brian rummaged around his kitchen for a moment before sighing, he gave King his dog some food before heading to the door, he open it and poked his head out " Any of you guys got anything to eat? I have to pay rent and i'm out of food" He said sighing running a hand threw his hair. " and I don't think I can handle eating dog food.... Again" he added.
Quintus (played by Deathmarch419)

“What do ya do for a living? Ya know, to afford living in such a five star abode as The Palace.” She asked, the joking tone helping calm the nervous parts of his mind..
Quintus Smirked, "well I'm actually a prince, hence why I live in a palace" he stated seriously before giving a wink and a grin,
He continuing, " In all seriousness though I'm a private investigator, still new at it though" he finished.
After a second he asked teasingly, " So how about you? how do you make your "fortunes" so you can live in such a wonderful paradise?" as he said this he accepted the offered seat and eased himself in setting down the 6-pack that he'd brought, taking up two of them he handed her one before opening his, as he got comfortable he heard the Biker kids door open and a voice called out
" Any of you guys got anything to eat? I have to pay rent and i'm out of food" - " and I don't think I can handle eating dog food.... Again"
As Quintus heard this he was left with a conundrum, Invite these two to into his home, or abandon this conversation temporarily to help the young biker out....
" Yeah I've got some" he called out looking at Rowen apologetically, before continuing, "I'll go bring some down." with that he stood up and said to Rowen with a sigh "If it's alright with you we can keep talking when I come back" With a smile he once again headed upstair

Well, that walk was crappy. Everywhere I went, there was construction going on.

Vera made her way back to the complex. There was a shopping bag in her hands. She stopped by the convenient store on the way back to pick up her favorite food--snack--sweet? What the hell was gum supposed to be anyway? Upon the thought, the teen shrugged slightly. It didn't exactly matter to her, as long as it tasted good, and not fake. The local store didn't have her usual brand, so she had compromised. Looking in her bag once more, she counted the many brands she had purchased. Five packs to try and judge.

Vera made her way up the rickety staircase once more. She had slowed, and glanced at the lady in the chair, drinking and talking with the man from earlier, only this time, he had left the lady for a bit. No more nice, stranger man to save her from socializing from this potential criminal. This sucked major ass.

Mortimus followed close behind Vera, as always. He slowed to a halt, and stared at the lady as well.

"Keep avoiding eye contact...." Vera muttered.

"It would be unchallenging to simply converse with this woman." Mortimus told her.

"I ain't doing that Morty. She smokes. I don't associate with tobacco lovers. They're chumps."
Brian waited at his door quietly, his dog came up behind him and stick his head outside, it spotted a squirrel and bolted past Brian and down the stairs after it " KING! get back here!" Brain called out after the Germen Sheppard. King lost the squirrel and trotted back to Brian " Bad dog " Brian said dragging the dog back inside.

Rowen had a some what feline-esque expression sitting on her striking features as she listened to Quintus explain himself, sort of smug, sort of pleased, sort of amused, sort of predatory.

She gratefully took the offer beer from the six pack, wrapping a hand around the chilled can and praising the brief cold.

Ha, fortunes, she almost snorted out loud in amusement. Theiving? Selling? Working my ass off at multiple, crappy little slime-holes for rent and beer? None of those seemed like the good way to go while talking to a private investigator.

“I’m a barista, at a little cafe.” She answered after a moment, flashing a smile.

Her large eyes were focused on her new companion while the biker guy’s voice echoed into the complex. Rowen wrinkled up her cute nose. Again? Eating dog food again?

A brief memory of her and her brother, only six, eating the food of a dog owned by their parents friend because they were starving and hadn’t seen their parents in a couple days.

She shuddered.

When Quintus excused himself to help the boy, Rowen raised the beer can to gesture while she assured,” I’ll be right here.” Before popping open the can of beer, a little spraying out over her thighs.

In the corner of her vision as she watched Quintus head off towards the boy’s apartment, she caught a glance of the green haired teenage girl from earlier. Rowen wasn’t even going to turn her attention to the girl this time, until she heard the teen muttering again. Something about smoking and chumps. Rowen could only guess.

“Hey, Girlie!” She called for the girl’s attention. “Is there something you’d like to say? I didn’t catch it.”

(Hey guys, just wanted to let you know I’ve created a group similar to this RP. It’s called Paradise Apartments https://www.rprepository.com/group/group.php?gID=2654&page=6143 . If you wanna check it out 😊 though, I will be continuing this post anyways. I am thoroughly enjoying it.)
Vera Crawfield (played by koobler)

Damn it, Crawfield! Quit muttering out loud, you dumbass! After silently cursing herself, she slowly turned to the lady, giving her the most superficial smile she had.

She shrugged a little. "Eh, nothing much. Just talking about....depression and boyfriends, as all teenagers do." The teen let out an anxious chuckle.

....That wasn't convincing at all, Vera.
