Get better at RP fighting?

I've been through a few rounds before, but can't seem to tell the fine lines between "God-Modding" and "Autoing". Nobody's said a thing about me doing either of the two things ever, so I guess I must be doing something right?
Honestly, different folks have different rules and standards. Some want to agree on an outcome, some use dice to decide who hits and misses, some just trust balance with give and take until someone admits defeat.

Godmodding is kind of an umbrella terms for various forms of unfair play, but most often associated with being too powerful for the given game or, yes, autoing (mostly autohit). So long as you're being reasonable about capabilities within your setting, focusing on a fun plot over "winning," and not taking control of the other person's character (either what they do or declaring something for sure affected them in some way), then yes, you're probably doing well. :)
The best rule of thumb is to not think of combat as it's own entity. It's just another chance to tell a good story. Whatever makes the story more exciting and fun for everyone, do that.

Everyone knows Batman V.S. Superman has every reason to be a short curb stomp, but it never is because that wouldn't be awesome. Make the fights awesome.
The simplest rule of all is to never think of a fight as something to win. Like everything else in RP, it is a means of telling a story. To create a good fight, you must first create a good character. If you do that, and you are aware of your character’s flaws and weaknesses meshed realistically with their strengths, you can’t miss.

So, that said. Give your characters definable weaknesses in a fight. Even if you don’t tell them explicitly, your character must have the ability to fail somehow. No one is perfect, so no character should be perfect.

The hands-down most objectively best way to RP Battle is by setting player stat parameters and letting the dice decide, so in that way, no one gets blamed. What're ya gonna do? Curse out the RNG? Well, I mean, you can do that, but still!
