What I mean is, what's the largest amount of people you've RolePlayed with in just one RolePlay overall? For me, my biggest would be Ten. How 'bout you guys? Not counting group RolePlays 'cause... Well, yeah.
My record was 99 in a yahoo chat room, it was a hell of a rp and a very long post order xD we where acting out a war and it took FOREVER to get a few battles done, but I wouldn't change it for the world, but I would have to say, DONT DO IT ITS TOO MUCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Over text based things.. I managed to play out one demi-god, a minor noble, four soldiers, ten goblins, a dragon, a witch, a different witch, twenty individual cultists, a knight.. And like another hundred unimportant people..

For clarification, you're talking about in a single RP session, right? I used to play primarily on Furcadia, so excluding "group roleplays" to me means excluding RPs where multiple people HAVE participated. Pardon me, the wording was just a bit confusing.
And in that case, I believe the highest number was... 15? 20? Somewhere in there--usually reserved for plot RPs, of course, where it was expected that the group gathering for the session was going to get big.
Other than that, I've had random RPs end up gaining at most 5-6 people; but I find that all terribly overwhelming if I'm not expecting a group to grow out of the blue, so I try to avoid those situations if I can.
But if you're talking about on a character front, since it looks like that's how Gutebnurg is replying, at most I've probably juggled 6 characters at any one time, in a special 1x1 RP where we needed a lot of NPCs and action going on. Always a hassle, but worth the immersion.

Yes, I did mean in one Session. Sorry for the confusion!
Up to around 10 or so as well. Like Copper, I RPed on Furcadia frequently which meant group RPs were inevitable.
Nowadays I avoid them as much as possible if it's not a one-off scene with all players online at the same time. I find it incredibly difficult to stay motivated when it sometimes takes day before it's my turn on forum group RPs. Everyone has their real life responsibilities and I don't blame them for that, but my drive does not extend that far. My moods change frequently and my attention span is limited. Long term 1x1 RPs turn out better cause the story can move along faster and keep me interested.

Having held events I can easily say 20-40 people for the initial introduction, after that I always encourage them to go into smaller groups with people they haven't RP'd with before.
I have to say, if it's a huge group (if you play furcadia for instance and are familiar with TGT's format) I feel as though I'm being scrutinized and any errors in my writing or double use of a synonym is earning me a burning judgement. Which only makes me put out purple prose out of fear LOL. It's a terrible anxiety to have, but one that can be worked over!!

Oh and there were no posting orders. And 'no plot' as in, things really couldn't be controlled and all sorts of things happened. One of my fave acts - in a way - was the whole Nazi arc that happened, and I had just planned for a calm resting session for the group when returning to the cantonment. But one person decided that the cantonment was going to be quiet and 'lifeless'. While we others looked around, that one person discovered some stuff and then another person decided to throw Nazies in the dough. Well, needless to say, a lot of things happened

I think the most in one session has been like...9 people? And it did not go well at all. Took a good hour to an hour and a half for us to get through one round of posting (since it was kept in an order.) It was a very plot-important moment, so it wasn't surprising, but there were so many people pelting the Big Bad with attacks that it just became ridiculous and was more of a "hit it until it dies" situation instead of a big suspenseful fight like was intended, and got dragged out for somewhere around 9 hours.
So by the time it finally ended, there was about 2 posts of celebration/relief that the villain was defeated, before everybody that was left had to leave because it was so late!
For this reason I prefer smaller groups, and especially 1x1s. If it was a big group with a style that was more concise, it may have gone better, but everybody wanted (and kind of needed) to post a decently sized paragraph, so it ended up being really frustrating. x-x

I was asked to be super strong and survive 3 rounds so that all 40 people had a chance to get in a shot and feel they participated in taking out the godlike boss. Apparently, no one told THEM this was the plan though, because we didn't even make it through one full round before the event detonated into howling about godmodding. This was sad because the entire point of the NPC being there was to have it be defeated, but clearly the concept of scaling enemies to the party was alien to a lot of folks. I have played final NPCs for other groups that were smaller, 10-30 people range and had it go fine though. I think it was less the number of people involved and more the level of trust in the DMs.)

I would say around thirty. The group in question was do a world explosion, where all the people involved would be flung out into different universes as part of an event for the X-Men: Evolution forum I ran for a couple of years.
IRL, our normal LARP groups average around 40 people, but I've been to some bigger ones (100+ people firefly larp, a boffer introduction) and I've also participated in a mass snail-mail RP with a group that consisted of around 75 people, but it turned into a disaster when two key players moved without telling anyone their forwarding addresses!
