I've been juggling 8 walruses and 5 phoenixes all this time...

They aren't programmed to be able to, so far as I know.

perhaps someone could try that theory out

They just show up very briefly in a fight sometimes. Can't even be targeted.

Yep, the walruses will jump in to absorb some damage for you, and the phoenixes will do a little extra damage.
