A little update on Maw. I got a bit worried a couple weeks ago about Maw as there was a raven that got killed on the busy highway, and I worried it may have been him as he hadn't been by for quite a while. Crowley would come by once or twice a week, but no Maw.

I think what happened is Maw was 'promoted' in the regional murder due to the death and had some fill-in duties. The reason I thought this was I saw him in the parking lot of the local IGA grocery store about a km away from our house a few days ago. He recognized me, but it was obvious he didn't have time for me there.

Anyway, it must have reminded him to stop in, because he did yesterday and we had our five minutes of fellowship as he collected the treats. He then took a couple swallows of water and off he flew. He's a busy raven these days.

Thanks for the update.

Happy to know that Maw is ok, those ravens have become like local stars of an episodic tale. :)

I'm carrying on about my Raven clan again. This is where I do it.

There has definitely been a paradigm shift in the clan dynamic after the death of who I assume was a 'senior' male. Maw has been scarce, but hasn't been too far away most days. He did come to my office window last week one afternoon and did his callout to me. I went out and fed him some, but he wasn't all that interested. He wanted to play the game with my hand, and would take the food when he tapped me, but he wasn't into chasing down the thrown treats much.

Enter Nut, the young male who paired with 'Bolt', who was one of Maw and Crowley's fledglings a couple years ago. They have taken over command of the street and our front yard, and as mentioned before, Crowley isn't really happy with him. Maw seemed indifferent when Nut descended and landed on the verandah roof while we were having our moment. Maw immediately hobbled off down the path and called out several times when he got to the tool shed before flying off. It was like a 'handover' or something to Nut of the yard. After that, both Nut and Bolt came down to forage the back yard and take any remaining treats I had in hand.

Maw has flown by daily since, and he calls out as he does, but he hasn't landed since that day. I think he and Crowley may have assumed the territory the old male had. I'm really curious what happens to the matriarch when they lose their 'mate-for life'.
