It seemed like a large spawn because it was a double spawn. Someone got a riddle just before the hourly spawn.

At spawn, a random number is rolled between a minimum and maximum (which fluctuates as the game progresses). The spawn then creates monsters up to that number; if the spots are already filled, it doesn't refill them.
So the spawn was divided into two, but the fact that it happened 1 minute apart doesn't change how many we ultimately ended up with. The spawn just rolled a large number.
