We use both words, but we usually call it dressing. No matter how it's cooked. What about you? I've just learned that people call it different things...until today I thought everyone called it dressing! It's so interesting.

i've never heard of it being called 'dressing' outside of when you put it in a turkey- do people actually call it that??

we've always called it 'stuffing' here. then again, it is the south. we like to say different things just to confuse people, sometimes.

Dressing is what goes on Salad.
Stuffing is what goes inside a Turkey.

Whaaaaa? Ok I'm confused now! Maybe it's just some southern states that call it "dressing" then. (Texan here). I know I'm not crazy because here's an article about it! It's a thing! LOL

The Great Debate: Is It Stuffing or Dressing?

The article says recipes for "dressing" show up no farther north than Mississippi and recipes for "stuffing" show up a lot in the Northern states. So hmmmm. But other articles say it's only called dressing it it's cooked outside the turkey. So I dunno! Well...it's a Thanksgiving mystery... You've officially disproven the article. Hehe

:P

And yes we do do that, don't we? Mwa ha ha. ("Get me a coke" can mean "get me a soda" and "bless your heart," can mean "I'm trying really hard not to cuss you out"...not usually, but it can.)

Haha. :)

Australia has spoken! :)

And I agree, that's dressing too.

Yeah exactly this.

I'm not too sure what this is talking about entirely, but the idea of 'dressing' going into a turkey (that is what this is about, right?) is strange to me considering dressing would imply something on the outside haha.

My friend from AZ says they say "stuffing" too.

... and you can fine recipes for”stuffing” that is baked in a casserole dish and only gets near the turkey when it’s all on the table. Go figure.

That is true. Stuffing makes more sense. Unless it's just cooked on the outside and used to "dress" the slices of turkey you get. But it goes in a separate part of the plate. Hmmmm you're right, I dunno why we call it dressing!

But if there's someone else who does call it dressing, I'd like to know. Lol. I'm gonna be asking everyone this question now. Ha

True! That's what that article was saying. The dictionary definition isn't really how people use the word. :p

We definitely call it stuffing up here in the Pacific Northwest. (State of Washington represent!)

We call it this whether it ever goes in the turkey or not.

But in the immortal words of Bob Cratchit. "All that remains to be seen is, should we put the stuffing inside the goose, or the goose inside the stuffing? But since the goal is ultimately to put them both inside ourselves, I don't suppose that really matters!"

(May be paraphrased a tad, but the meaning is still unchanged, lol)
I've heard the phrase "dress the turkey" or "dressing the turkey." I thought "dressing" referred not just to the stuffing, but also to all the external seasonings and whatnot you toss on.

For just what you put inside... I grew up calling it stuffing. Moved across the US from Michigan to Oregon, and still call it stuffing, and everyone around me still does too.

I did change from saying "pop" to saying "soda" though.

That's interesting that people in Oregon call it soda. I guess some things are south/west things and some things are north/east things, instead of them being a straight up north/south variations.

Welp...I'm definitely in the minority on this dressing thing! Haha
