A look back at 2011

Posted by Kim on December 31, 2011, 2:20am

Sometimes, I get frustrated when I have to spend so much time doing client work that I can't work on new features for the RPR.

But looking back on this year, I'm proud of how far we've come. I'm so used to Forum Chat and dice on the forums, it's hard to imagine they're both less than a year old!

January 10
  • We move to our new server.
  • Number of gallery images allowed increased from 20 to 50.
  • Green Aracana template (provided by Sanne) released.
January 13
  • My development log gets digitized to make it easier to keep track of what I'm working on and planning.
January 25
  • Groups are first released in alpha
January 28 February 10
  • Accolade bling gets displayed on user profiles for the first time.
March 4
  • Notifications completely rewritten to be much more flexible -- we think. Oh how naive we were then about what they would eventually have to accommodate!
March 24
  • The forums get moderators for the first time. I breathe a huge sigh of relief, and resume leaving the house and sleeping without the intense fear something will go wrong I won't be around to help with. Thank you for keeping me sane, moderators!
March 25
  • First annual Epic Celebration begins
  • The first official RPR song is released
  • Cityscape templates are added
March 26
  • Dice are added to the forums
  • Ancient Vineyard and Strawberry Patch templates are released
March 27
  • Justify and Collapse BBcode tags are added
  • Submerged and Orion Nebula templates are added
March 28
  • An option is added to gallery widgets to display full-size images right on profile pages, instead of as thumbnails
  • Super computer templates are added
March 29
  • Recent activity widgets are added
  • Orchid templates are added
March 30
  • New England Ivy template is added
March 31
  • Forum chat is added
  • Bright vineyard, pale moonlit forest, no-scrollbox orchids templates are added along with two new colors of the super computer AND the victorian lace templates
  • Epic celebration ends.
April 1
  • The site escapes any april fools pranks from its admin, because I passed out and slept for a week after the epic celebration.
May 2
  • Search upgraded
  • Character and group management pages added
  • The site is brought down for a few hours by its first cyber attack
May 9 May 20 June 3 June 27
  • The site moves to another new server to accomodate its growth.
  • Printable character sheets are added
  • It's decided that forum chat will remain free for everyone.
  • The battle of error undefined occurs; generates fan art
July 20
  • We celebrate our first nerdiday: The 42nd anniversary of the moon landing. Three new lunar-themed templates are added (cursive moon, blood moon, moon walk)
July 29
  • Epic members are allowed to customize their player profiles for the first time
  • Waning moon template added
August 15
  • Top Secret groups are added
  • Group customization is updated, modeled after the point and click interface that was originally developed for epic members to mod their profiles
August 19
  • We celebrate our second Nerdiday: We still miss you, firefly with a new emoticon :firefly-is-over:
August 24
  • We celebrate our third Nerdiday: The eruption of mount Vesuvius with two new templates: Burnt Offerings and Phreatic Eruption
  • I blow up the site layout by accident
  • We simultaneously experience a massive sign-up attack from Chinese robots
August 21
  • The site breaks even on its operating costs for the first time ever!
August 27 August 31 September 3
  • Some of our RPR animated shorts are screened at DragonCon
September 8
  • I am once again called upon to do battle with the Chinese robot army, who try to invade our forums with spam. Several days are required to fully quash the uprising, and new security is added to prevent anything else like it.
September 19
  • The site celebrates Talk Like a Pirate Day with a poetry & limerick contest
September 28
  • The site celebrates National Ask a Stupid Question day by asking me dozens of great questions
October 17
  • MASSIVE REDESIGN of both aesthetics and inner workings. Probably the largest single update the site has ever seen.
  • Too much new stuff to list here. See the change log
October 29
  • The ability to purchase gifts for friends is released
November 20 November 23
  • Keri becomes our 3000th user
November 29
  • Code that handles templates is rewritten to prepare for new features.
  • 2 new template colors: Road Kill and Red Victorian Lace
December 3
  • The site observes the Festival of Being Excellent To Each Other
December 4
  • Kudos are officially announced, although a few users found the features a day early and gave out 50 kudos before it was even officially announced.

Thanks everyone for your kind wishes. I have love love loved knowing you all this year. It's been fantastic. I so look forward to 2012 with you guys! <3 <3 <3 <3

Lemme answer some specific stuff, too...

@Hikaru: Don't worry, we'll keep on being awesome next year, too. There's plenty of stuff still left to watch unfold! ;)

@Earendill: Kudopocalypse has been SO amazing so far! But it's not yet over. We still have until midnight tonight. Then I'll know how many kudos to report! ;) You guys have just waltzed right past my original goal of 500. In fact, you waltzed right past it in the first hour of Kudopocalypse. We're closer to 730 now. What do you think we will end at, 800? 1000? NONE SHALL STOP OUR KUDOS! :D

@Bonebag: Actually, we're only about a year and a half old. We'll turn two in late April 2012. :)

Ohohoh also I see we have a fancy BIG FAT PREVIEW BUTTON huzzah! *clicks it forever with joy and lovelies*

Er, um, my love of the preview button aside, seriously, we've gotten so much accomplished this year! Huzzah! Go RPR!

RPR has come a very long way. It's something else to list everything that's been accomplished here within the last year.

You totally forgot to mention the Kudopocalypse, which is a huge succes so far! :D

By the end of next year we'll look back at this list and laugh at how naive we were back now and how little awesome features we had. At this rate we'll have an army of nanobots scouring the servers, all in service of the great RPR entity that became sentient the 21th of December 2012.

I should've joined earlier. -3- That's all I can say, really.
It's pretty cool to read all of the stuff that this site has gone through this year. Wonder how 2012's gonna turn out? Hopefully I'll be here long enough to see it all~

I just woke up, got on here, and saw this. This is great for me because I came back AFTER all this happened. It is, however, missing one thing: it doesn't list the day I joined the site, Kim :l.
