No, of course we're not becoming a pet site named the RolePet RepoSittery. We're still going to be a site largely focused on facilitating RP and storing character profiles. As most of you caught and joyfully played along with, that announcement was for April Fools'. 
The pet rocks and the Walragotchi, on the other hand? They helped to facilitate the prank, but weren't, themselves, a prank -- we're keeping them!
The "Walragotchi" pet care simulator is staying up indefinitely, and you can keep your pet rocks forever. You can continue to play with your pets as much (or as little) as you like. And yes, particularly well-cared for Walruses and Phoenixes will give better assistance in Epic Week battle than those that don't have their needs met.

And if that won't work for you because all your pets are in your display case, by popular demand I've also added a way to include the Walragotchi in your site navigation under Your Stuff » My Pets. You can toggle it on in your Pet Settings, like so:
For the rest of the week, you can also continue to randomly find treats and other care items for your pets while browsing the site. You have to have claimed at least one pet rock to be eligible to find those extra tidbits.
Claiming pet rocks is not time-limited. If you're reading this for the first time in 2030 or beyond, you can still get your free pet rocks.
Thank you so much everyone for a lovely April 1st, I was absolutely thrilled by the positive reception to the pet rocks and associated silliness! A big thanks also to Ilmarinen, who jumped in and started producing the most adorable pet rock art on the planet at an astonishing pace upon hearing my basic idea for the Walragotchi.
