Mental Health Check-in!

Posted by Kim on October 28, 2020, 9:00am

You may be experiencing some unusually high levels of anxiety this week. You know... higher than the anxiety you may have been experiencing for this crazy, crazy, 2020 of a year. If you are -- I'm right there with you.

I wanted to take a moment to remind you that the RPR has fairly extensive mental health resources, including a lot of stuff that can help to calm you down or cheer you up. :) Taking good care of your mental health is equally as important as eating healthy and getting enough sleep!

Please share what YOU do to calm down and cheer up in the comments! For me, volunteering, exercise (crypt of the necrodancer, anyone?), hanging out with my pets, and coloring books help a lot to keep me sane.

I'll do a random drawing from commenters, and send the winner a coloring book meant to de-stress adults. :D

Deep breaths, RPRFam! We're plunging into the future together!

As a single mom of 2 young children, making time for my own self care and the things I enjoy has been a struggle and a priority. Roleplaying helps and I love to read paranormal romances especially by my favorite author Christine Feehan. Sometimes just going to my room and watching a little tv helps too.

I have been RPing for years, and sometimes it's a great thing for my mental health, especially if it is something that pertains to the emotion I am going through at that particular moment because it gives us a chance to 'write it out' so to speak. It breathes a new form of life into the issue(s) at hand and sometimes allows for creative thinking on how to solve it.

When I am not in the mood for RP, I will often listen to calming music and meditate! It is a great way to clear headspace. Brewing tea (such as chamomile and lavender) are also great ways to help with mental health (and insomnia!) That, and they make great milk tea.

However, should your mental health go too far, or you feel suicidal, please make sure to seek out the proper resources! <3

I just found out about this page today and this is one of the first things I read. I think I found my new RP home.

I compose music to calm myself down. I have a website that I create music on quite often, so whenever I'm feeling down I put a piece together and express my emotions through the sound of music. It's a great outlet, and when it's all finished I get to listen back to what my emotions created. Oddly enough feeling bad makes me not feel bad at all, if you know what I mean. If you don't, what I'm saying is that when I feel bad I create pieces that make me feel good, and that's a good thing. So when I feel bad I don't. :) <3

Being we just got done with our 2nd lockdown, I cannot underestimate the therapy a good walk is. Relaxing, refreshing, and good exercise!

And now that I'm allowed to go at least 25 km from home, a good drive to a new park to walk keeps it fresh.

Another thing I do is put the headphones on, start a long youtube playlist and lay on the floor with my eyes closed and let my mind wander with the music.

  • Calm relaxing music from artists like: Adrian von Ziegler, Danheim, and BrunuhVille
  • Watch fact videos from BE AMAZED
  • Hop onto my PS Vita, do some hack n slash of Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate.
  • Read, read, read, and MORE READING!
  • Watch cute vids like msooooch Dynasty Warriors style
  • Watch restoration videos of different items from Tysy Tube
  • Go outside to play with my three dogs, or simply sit outside and hold/pet/love all of them.

Listening to rock music is my #1 go to relaxer.

Annoying my cat by drowning him in kisses and cuddles is the runner up and in third place, reading/writing/art all tie. ;)

Music is my number one go to. Oddly enough, it's usually some pretty intense metal, rather than something that sounds calming. For me if I try to go straight to the calming music from a state of high anxiety, it feels like the music clashes too much with my energy so it's actually more upsetting? But with metal I can let out the pent up energy and start to wind down.

I also wear a lot of jewelry, stone bead bracelets, and long strands of beads. Fidgeting with them, or rubbing a worry stone helps.

Sometimes I also take one of my snakes out, or I spent time being very fussy over the enclosures.

Well, to calm down, I love to play Terraria. It can be quite relaxing to play sometimes

If that doesn't work, I listen to some music, read, or find a nice quiet place to just yell

There's this huge mental health resource list specifically tailored on how to cope with some issues brought on due to the pandemic. And there's some other useful tidbits in there for mental health in general. If anyone wants to check it out, this is the link: click here for it.

Oh man have things been especially draining. I have about zero spoons lately.

Some things I do to destress are:

1. listen to music

2. play animal crossing new horizons or slime rancher

3. watch comfort shows and movies (megamind, anastasia, rugrats, sitcoms.)

4. dance

5. wrap myself in a blanket and just sit in silence for a while. I'm often over stimulated and sound/lots of visuals makes me feel worse.

I do these things to calm myself down

1. Play video games

2. Listen to my entire playlist of music (Which is pretty big xD)

3. Watch a movie

4. Listen to music & try to get some rps started

5. Talk with friends on Discord

For me it's knitting personal projects while I watch Let's Plays on Youtube of games I like. :D That usually includes two fluffballs snuggling in my lap and trying to eat the yarn, kind of like this and this. :D

To calm down is to listen loud metal, the more aggressive, the better!

Playing a good ol' game of DOOM Eternal on Ultra-Nightmare keeps me sane. But it might not do the same for you

Music always helps me to keep my sanity in check. There is nothing better than a good metal to clear your mind.

Music, abstract sketching, conversing with my birds and snuggling with the dogs have really helped me out lately.
