The Tangent Hunters (played by psionicburst)

My name is Itrix Cotironin.
It is 1678.
I am an alchemist and a wizard.
For many years, I have peered into the past and future to see what destinies lie in wait for the world.
However, I cannot share my studies with anyone as I might get executed for witchcraft. I would never dare to leave my chamber dressed in my "strange" garb, so I travel the world in secret, hoping that I would find a suitable apprentice to share my research with. As for now, my journal is the only record of my studies. The most notable one is the raw power of nature, that is to say, manipulation of the earth's weather. For I do not know, but what I have discovered is undoubtedly ground breaking and might possibly "evolve" humanity to a higher apex, none that we have ever seen the likes of before. I have named this ability "tunnel polarity". When I reach out to grasp this power, I can feel my very soul plunging within the core of the earth and all of my blood being imbued with the power of earth's gravity so that I become tethered to its life force and feel the awesome energies from within.
Only time will tell if anyone would be willing to train under my teachings.

Itrix closed the book, marking another entry sealed. He slid the book on his desk, making a satisfying knock as it made contact with the wood.

He cautiously got out of his seat. His training under tunnel polarity enhanced his senses so that he could be more aware of his surroundings. There was someone at his door.

Go ahead! Feel free to go all out!
Fyonae (played anonymously)

Fyonae was exhausted. She had used up the entirety of the sun, the day now spent and night fallen. Her bare feet were sore from the long day's walk, the long week of travel, and her bones weary. Shouldering the satchel she used to carry the few necessities she needed to sustain herself she paused to peer through the gloom, her hazel green eyes narrowing as she spotted the cottage nestled among the trees.

She didn't usually infringe upon strangers, yet her bones and anching muscles begged her to at least try and get one night of rest upon anything other than gnarled tree roots. The forest was expansive, and she had covered a lot of distance from the nearest town, where she had sold her recent carvings. Rather than pay for a ride back to her clan's small village, Fyonae chose the more solitary path, and the more lengthy, preferring to travel on foot because of her shadow. At the thought she glanced down at the lupine shadow, oddly still visible, thougb barely, despite the lack of sun to cause such a shadow. The wolven shape flattened its ears slightly, echoing the annoyance which flickered at the decision she must make.

Finally, Fyonae gave in and tread softly toward the cottage door, raising a hesitant fist to knock upon the well worked wood, pausing only slightly before doing so. A good nights sleep would do her good. Possibly a hot meal. What harm could there be from asking? As she awaited someone to answer the door, her hopes up, Fy tucked a strand of her reddish brown hair behind an ear, biting her lower lip. She studied her surroundings as she figited slightly, hoping someone was home.

((Hope that was okay!))

(No worries! It was excellent!)

Itrix stood completely still and tried to sense who the being was from behind his door outside. Due to the nature of tunnel polarity, if he wanted to sense objects out of his view, he would activate his power only for a second to determine how far and what size the object was.

It was a person.

He cleared his throat. "What is your business here?"

Fyonae blinked. The door still hadn't opened and she began to feel awkward. "Uh.. sorry to bother you. My name is Fyonae, and I only wished to request a place to stay for the night, as my bones are weary from sleeping on the earth so many nights in a row. I do not wish to put you out, however, just say the word and I will go." Her voice wavered a fraction, weary and just wanting a good sleep. The wolven shadow upon the ground offered a low whine and her gaze flicked to it before returning to the door. Obviously whoever lived here was the cautious sort.

"I can pay..." She added softly, though with enough strength to carry through the obviously heavy wooden door. "I wouldn't ask for board without payment, and I won't be any trouble." Not that she could offer him any proof of that. Words weren't worth much, but it was all she had for the time being.

Itrix weighed his options accordingly. He did not want his secret to be spread into the masses, yet his dwelling was far from the reaches of civilization. What did he have to fear? Obviously, the person wanted solace, and who was he to deny such requests? Cautiously, he opened the door and there stood a tired and worn out female, about 18 years of age, he estimated.

"I will grant this request, but I shall also ask something of you. The things you will witness within my chambers are not meant for the eyes of the commoners, for I will surely be burned as a warlock by the flames of the church if my work is compromised. I've fled towards the countryside to remedy this, but alas, I must move out further so that I can continue my work in isolation. That is to say, if you wish to become my...apprentice, you can, but be warned, fair...Fyonae, once you learn my secrets, there is no turning back."

The door swung open and Fyonae felt a flicker of relief eyeing the man who stood before her. Was he going to allow her to board for the night? Then, as she listened to his words, her smile momentarily faltered. It was an odd trade... he would allow her to stay, in return for her becoming his apprentice? Apprentice in what? These thoughts circulated quickly through her mind, a bit of unease moving through her at the unknowns. Her shadow's ears flicked a few times, it's tail swinging restlessly in it's 2D plane of existence.

Voice faltering a bit, she cocked her head, curious. "Wha.. What would I be an apprentice of? Must I stay here?" She thought of her clan home, still several days journey into the mountains by a stunningly crystal clear lake. She loved adventure, and didn't shy from trying new things, yet she longed to see her home again soon, it's peace renewing her vigor. But her curiousity was indeed piqued by what the man had said... she had apparently stumbled onto something intriguing and her sense of excitement perked up at the thought. She knew well how it felt to be afraid of retribution from those who didn't understand magical things... the nature of her own secret she had kept hidden as much as possible, yet she had felt the change in the way her clan regarded her. She was different now, and treated as such. Yet none of them had turned her into the authorities at the nearest village, they were still family after all.

The old man eyed the girl as she walked in, inspecting small details, noting the odd shaped shadow cast on the ground as she entered, yet not drawing attention towards it, he felt a strange energy coming from her. Something he had never felt before on the earth. She was a special kind of human, but considering her plight, he decided to not bombard her with questions that would frighten her. It wasn't everyday that he would get a visitor. A docile one, at that.

With contempt in his eyes, he extended a hand and watched it as a yellow, wispy flame of light danced in his palm, sparkling with an otherworldly radiance.

"Where do you ache? Of course, if you don't believe me, I can show you what a small spark of my energy can do towards the pain...but first..." He extinguishes the flame by closing his palm. "...where do you come from, Fyonae? I'm sure you have an interesting tale to tell...your eyes, they have indeed seen such adventure. Tell me, if you will." The wizard said with a friendly warmth in his voice while pulling towards him a wooden stool.

Following the man into his cottagr she glanced back as the door was shut behind her, before turning to gaze about the entryway, taking it in even as she felt the wizard's own eyes taking in her form. She turned to watch him then, offering a smile. "Thank you for allowing me rest here." The soft brogue of her voice felt a bit muted in the small confines of the cottage. She reached up to pull absentmindedly oj a strand of her hair as she continued to glance around. She had noted he had not answered her question, yet decided against repeating it. Perhaps he was not yet ready to share. Her curiousity waa growing quickly.

When he summoned a flame the excitement sparked brighter in the hazel green of her eyes and she watched with facination. But when he asked about her own tale a guarded look fell over her face. She did however, offer another small smile, inclining her head a bit. "I come from further into the forest, several days travel nearer the mountain. My clan resides there by the deepest lake, where we make our living. I am on my way back there, from selling my carvings at the village some days travel beyond the forest." She did not expound for now on her shadow, though she knew the wizard had seen it. For now, the shape seemed to be looking around curiously, nearly a mirror of her own actions, it's ears flicking.

"As for my pains... they can be helped by a nights rest on a bit more cushioned ground. I have been spending my nights of travel with only the trees as company and only their roots as a pillow." She offered a wry smile and shrugged, "one must expect an amount of muscle aches when having done that."

"Several days you've traveled...such a long journey you have undertaken..." He strokes his long white beard as he gets up from his stool as walked towards the table strewn with various papers.

In the back of the desk, he pulls out a long blanket of thick cloth. A large blanket with runes and various patches making up a distinct pattern only he would understand was on its frontside.

"Here. This is something that might aid you. Twas a gift...from my son..." He says with a distant look in his eye as if remembering a time long past.
Fyonae (played anonymously)

Fyonae found a smile lifting her lips once again as she reached for the blanket. "Thank you. It is generous of you to allow me to stay..." she hesitated, remembering his earlier words. "I would love to hear what you have to say, I confess my curiosity is piqued... as for apprenticeship.." she trailed off. Well she didn't really have much for her back home except for life as it had always been. Perhaps a bit of something new would be good for her, as well as getting away from the judging gazes and troubled faces she saw far too often glancing her way these days. They were uncomfortable around her and her peculiar shadow. If only they knew what else I could do..." she thought, knowing they might kick her out completely. Better she left before it came to that.

Lifting her chin she gave a nod, "while I would like to know more before making such a decision, I think I can understand why you would not impart the knowledge without my word. I will not tell a soul..." she stood holding the blanket, her eyes on tbe wizard as if trying to determine tbe nature of his secrets, and whether or not to trust him as far as placing herself under his tutelage. She couldn't deny the desire though, knowing she would accept the offer.

"I can see that you're unsure whether to trust me. Don't worry. If I had ill intentions, then you would have...felt it. The evil in this world has an aura of death and darkness. It is my sworn mission to convince them to see the light, or at the very least, bring them to justice. I-"

Then, a furious knocking at the door interrupted his train of thought.

"Someone followed you..." Itrix remarked. "You must hide yourself. Take care and watch as I deal with this one."
Fyonae (played anonymously)

The wizard's first words rang true within Fyonae. She had felt such an evilness from many with ill intentions, yet she knew that some could well conceal it. It didn't seem there was anything false to the wizard though, and Fyonae felt herself relax some - right before the harsh knock on the door.

Fyonae blinked, wondering why anyone would have followed her, and how she had missed such a one as well. But, she gave a quick nod, moving to stand back so that she was out of sight but able to peek through to see who might be at the door.

The wizard stepped in front of the closed door, arms behind him. Itrix was naturally passive and would generally avoid conflict, but the one at the door persisted on coming in.

"Old man! Let me in! I know you're hiding something in there!"

"Please, I do not wish to answer this question you pose."

"Oh, yeah? Then answer this!"

In a blinding flash of light, the door burst off its hinges, hitting Itrix head-on, knocking him off balance. The man was outfitted with a crimson cloak, armed with a tall wooden staff with a crystal on its top. He conjured a flaming orb and prepared to fire this at the man, but not before he scanned the room.

"I am a member of the Silent Eye! Dare oppose me, and pray I let you off easy, old fool!"

Itrix stood on the ground, his heart beating rapidly, then slowing as he channeled the power of tunnel polarity through his very soul. The intruder looked upon him as he rose to speak.

"This...old fool is not someone to challenge, I tell you this. Perhaps, we can settle this more democratically before we-"

"Silence!" The intruder yelled as he used a magic blast to throw him off the ground...and landing straight on Fyonae.

Fyonae's breath left her in a gasp as she fell beneath the wizards weight, her fear and anger sparking through her as she blacked out momentarily, the wolven shadow on the floor snarling, baring its shadowy fangs. Her emotions sparked, flaring brighter and she struggled to maintain a hold on them, knowing what came next should she fail.

Suddenly the wolven shadow seemed to grow, to shift from a 2D figure on the floor, becoming more solid and more real by the moment, its eyes beginning to glow the same hazel green as Fyonae's, who was now gone, vanished in place of the wolf. It slid out from under the wizard and turned its gaze on the intruder, barings its all too real fangs in a flash of anger before padding forward menacingly. Fyonae's ears twitched, fear and anger swirling. Who was this man to barge in, why had he followed her, and what did he search for?

She paused in her advance, her gaze never leaving the man, and her tail twitched, as if offering chance for him to leave.

"Surely...you can...you can be more sensible about this? I do not wish to fight, but if I must..."

Itrix's eyes burst into a glowing yellow hue, his body hovering above the ground, he pointed a finger at the intruder, letting forth a burst of lightning, knocking the intruder out the door and sliding onto the ground.

Outside, the cloaked individual clenched his jaw in pain as he got up to see that Itrix was already inches away from his position.

"You will regret that! Hah!"

A red wave of energy was suddenly conjured from the intruder's hand. Itrix could see that his face was gruesome in appearance. Blind in one eye and various scars embedded into his skin from battles long since past, the intruder hoisted himself off the ground and stood, bowing his head, representing his surrender.

"I don't have time for this. All I know is that you are here..."

The intruder was gone in the blink of an eye. Itrix sighed to himself as he let down his guard, the lightning disappearing from his eyes. He dusted himself off and tread back to his cottage with a pain in his back.
Fyonae (played anonymously)

By the time the wizard would reach the cottage, Fyonae was once again human, the wolven part of her but a shadow once again, as she'd gotten control of her emotions better. She hadn't followed the two, but stayed back, eyes troubled.

As the wizard returned she looked a bit concerned, "are you alright? Who was that man, and why did he attack you?" The questions rolled off her tongue even though she knew she was prying.

"Yes, yes. I'm fine. I've had worse injuries in my youthOH GODS!" Itrix fell to his knees as the pain shot through his spine like a bullet. His injury would have been much worse if he had neglected to use his tunnel polarity to go after the man.

Through a stifled breath, he placed his hand on his back, now glowing white and he began to stretch his back as the healing power slowly repaired him.

"That...was a member of the Silent Eye cult. I've studied this power, tunnel polarity, for years. I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but this planet is a marvelous thing. It has...an aura all its own. On top, this aura is filled with warmth and light, a positive energy. On the bottom, frost and darkness, a negative energy. The Silent Eye discovered the polarity around the same time I did. While I studied the life polarity, they enhanced their negative energies and discovered the harmful, negative polarity. This world is constantly in flux of these two things, one does not overpower the other, but that does not stop them. They wish to extinguish all the Life Polarity guardians on these lands so that they can influence this world for their own purposes. I am the last of my kind, Fyonae. That is why I am looking for a suitable apprentice so that I can teach them my secrets."
Fyonae (played anonymously)

Fyonae didn't yet understand much of what the wizard was saying, yet her gaze drank in the sight of him seemingly healing before her very eyes. What power was this? She tried to make sense of his explanations, her brow furrowing as he said he was the last.

Stepping forward she placed a soft hand carefully on his arm, a bit of concern showing in her eyes. "I will aid you if I can, yet... I don't know if I would be a suitable apprentice. I know nothing of this magic you speak of.. and my emotions can be" she hesitated, "somewhat volatile." She finished with a sigh, feeling suddenly weary again. "I am sorry for leading the man here. I will do all I can to pay for the pain the error has caused you."

With a glance then around the room, she bent to tidy up the various bits of decoration and other things that had fallen as the man attacked, trying already to set things to rights. How had she already rained misfortune down upon the man? It seemed she was doomed to a life of trouble.
