Gang, I'm very sorry that this thread got derailed. The_Diva and Novellaro have now been refused service from the site after speed-running their three strikes over the past four days. Mods have had to remove literal pages of misbehavior from these folks in other threads. As one of the several mods that was involved, I'm kind of gobsmacked by how they were characterizing things like their participation in Trixie's bar. It has convinced me they are not interested in participating here in good faith.
If you need to ask questions, kindly reach out via PM so we aren't derailing this poor thread any further.

So sorry for you having to put up with all of this. I felt a little like I started something I definitely did not intend to. A quote came to mind from Skyrim; "You started this war! Plunged Skyrim (this thread) into chaos!" 😂😭 I was also this 🤏 close to responding to them with this gif

Yeah no doubt. I wouldn't really have, but the temptation was there.
To get back on topic! I want to stay on RPR, the other rp sites are scary. Managed to find a site that is solely for posting ads and then players can continue the actual RP wherever they like, which is really cool, so I'm actually talking to a few folks thanks to that. It's called Barbermonger. But as far as the site goes I've seen some horrors out there today and I like it well enough here 😌

Not to respond in Kim's stead, but I can assure you that you did absolutely nothing wrong! We're responsible only for our own behaviors, not others'.

This is actually a big reason why I'm so loyal to the RPR. Outside of my friendship with Kim, the mods and my long history here, I also just haven't found another site where the overall community culture is in line with my personal expectations. I think RPR genuinely ruined other sites for me in this area lol.
Barbermonger looks interesting, have you used it yet?

Yes! Well, in the sense that I found ads on it and reached out to people there. I also joined the discord, because I realized some people posted ads in the actual discord server and in order to contact players on discord you need to be in the same server as them (I am such a boomer I did not know this)
So far I've met two very nice people and I do like the way the discord is set up, too. You get a good introduction when you join. They have, similar to RPR, one channel for every kind of RP (SFW) and one for NSFW. No-one roleplays in the actual discord, it is just that the ads getting posted there. They also have two channels where SFW/NSFW ads from the website get posted as well, so that people who do not go to the website can still see the ads on the website. It's pretty neat honestly. They also have rules to avoid spamming in the discord.
So far so good. Fingers crossed all works out so far!
Good lord. Someone definitely seems to live up to their name. And stuff like that is why RPR has that "be nice" rule.
Anyway.
When I was younger, I stuck heavily to public RP because I went through spaces where there seemed like there was an implication that you'd only RP in PMs/DMs if you "had something to hide," with the usual connotation being things of a sexual nature. Public RP felt safer as a result.
Now I'm much more comfortable in groups and PMs - usually not so much because of content not suitable for the public, or even because I can, indeed, be a bit shy and self-conscious, but rather because it's easier for me to keep track of and because there can be something that feel "safer" in having a smaller pool of players who I'm also more regularly interacting with OOC. There's some other weird mental things tied up in it all, too, but yeah... I'm most active in PMs/DMs and one group at any given time.
I have also largely socially transitioned to Discord. I'm not big on rping there, but there was a period where its more short, rapid style setup helped me to start getting back into rp my life had taken some tumbles. Among the people I've met through that, those actually around my age tended to favor TTRPGs, whether in-person or over the internet using various technologies to assist with that (including just Discord itself and some of the helper bots people have made for it).
The vast majority I've met through Discord, however, have been significantly younger than me, and their favored platforms for RP have been Discord itself (including dedicated RP servers or just spaces set aside in an otherwise non-rp server), Minecraft, or, again, TTRPGs. I've convinced a few of them to join RPR, but it took awhile for them to warm up to what was, to them, such a new and unfamiliar place, and they have still mostly stuck to a group I set up for us to keep familiar faces around, and to be a space for more paced-out RP than feels right on Discord. Some of them have poked around into some of the events, though, and a few seem to be growing rather fond of RPR, even if they're still a bit shy about the community.
Many people I've come across just plain feel overwhelmed by simply knowing that a given community is large. Keeping to smaller pockets with more familiar faces can feel safer and less stressful.
An aside regarding post lengths and such: Among those I've convinced to come over, post lengths have been highly variable, though usually trending toward a couple lines to a couple paragraphs. How much or how frequently any of them feel up to writing varies at times as well, but being in a close community that has come to be pretty comfortable with communicating with each other helps a ton in keeping things going until a stopping point is agreed on (whether that's a completion point or a "I don't think we can really make any more progress on this"). Some of them have expressed some feelings of inadequacy about making short posts - and have been assured that the length isn't important, and given examples of times those of us who are a little more consistent about somewhat longer posts have posted barely anything because it's all there really was, or because it was a point we'd gotten stuck on and we just needed to have something to get us back to where things could flow better again. And some of us have apologized for making longer posts - only to be met with assurances about how fun they can be to read. Granted, a lot of the youngin's in question are also outliers who are confused why their generation isn't reading more books or writing their own papers.

Do keep us posted! I don't have enough time to do more than 1-2 roleplays right now, which I'm already booked fully on with the extra ad I have out at the moment, but when my capacity clears up I might venture out there and see if I find some interesting RP partners!

I don't know for sure but I think so, since the number is just a statistic and not a "link" per se to show everyone who is online
Also, welcome to the site!

Hi again Rob! I think you still count as 'online' on the community page with the 'Who can see when you're online?' set to 'No one'. What that setting does is prevents the 'Active Now' icon from appearing on your profile page when you're online.
Huh, that was something.
Anyway, with all said and done, I don't think the forum is as empty as it appears. Claine managed to rack up a whole lot of people for the Write-A-Thon challenge.
