Forums » Suggestions & Development Discussion » A few technical/quality-of-life suggestions...

These are just some ideas that have been bumping around in my head since I started getting more familiar with the site. I don't know how much work would be involved in making these changes (my coding knowledge ceases beyond front-end features), but they would certainly make my life easier on the site:
  • A quicker way to add/remove multiple characters from categories at once.
Right now, I have to go to each of my characters individually, via several sub-links, to check/uncheck a box to change their categories, and it is very tedious and time-consuming.
  • A quicker way to access the custom CSS library.
Like mentioned above, getting to the CSS library involves multiple sub-link clicks that can be .
  • Live preview for custom CSS templates.
I know you can already preview CSS by saving and going to view the preview, but having a live preview (like the preview Epic Members have for changing colors on their profiles) would be awesome!
  • Access to CSS for existing, free templates for Epic Members.
I have no idea what the permissions issues might be regarding existing templates, but I have seen many attractive templates in the free templates sections, but they aren't...quite right for what I want to do with them. I would love to be able to tweak the fonts, change the margin size, etc.
  • Ability to see pinned icon on mobile.
This is incredibly minor, but at least in Android Firefox, the pinned icon is not visible in the forums, which does increase visibility of important Rules posts, etc.
  • More customization for following friends and their characters.
As much as I love my friends and following their characters, I may not be interested in every post said friend/character makes in a public RP that I/my character are not involved in.
  • Status system on personal profile and character profiles.
Having a status system of some sort (be it a simple icon or status-updates like on social media) would make it a lot easier for me to quickly and visibly update my/my character's availability for RP.
  • Smalltalk/RP Discussion/Art & Creativity/Forum Games - Adults Only
This one doesn't really need an explanation. More Adult Only sections, so that there are safe places for the adult roleplayers of this site to discuss mature RP. Right now, we're kind of banished to outside sources to discuss mature RP, which is not--by any stretch of the imagination--an easy way to network and find other players/characters looking for the same type of RP on the site. I'm not saying to allow pornography, smut threads in the forums, coarse language, etc., but give extra networking venues for those of us who don't want to RP with minors, period.
  • More advanced filters for group search.
    - Option to show groups that are 18+ membership only (and to exclude, as well).
    - Group genre categories.
    - Game platform affiliation categories (Furcadia, D&D, Pathfinder, freeform, etc.).
  • More than one connection option for characters.
Some characters are family...but they're also enemies or acquaintences (long-lost family member and all that).

We have the LFRP-AO forum? https://www.rprepository.com/community/forum.php?f=2894

Also, groups and PMs are intended to cover this type of content on the site. :)

I'm aware of the LFRP-AO forum, as it's the only Looking For RP forum I go to. It's just that it seems to be focused on looking for RP, not sharing creative content or having open discussion around RP.

And if groups are intended to be the hubs for these things, I think there should at least be an advanced search option to only show groups that require users to be 18+ to join. That would make my search for communities much easier!

This one is neat, but unnecessary. I say this because that is what adding notes to the character is for

I'm not sure if you mean the one that other epic members have actually created and have made free for people to use? Personally I feel that allowing templates to be edited by users is a bit of an insult to the creator considering how much time and effort they put into it.

I completely understand though, it may not be perfectly suited to your character/ideas, thankfully though this can be altered to your needs through bbcode such as colour/layout/a selection of fonts etc. If you struggle on ths end, there are a few lovely people such as Fiebs and The Template Jam who have put together pages full of free coding/layouts that could hopefully help you achieve the look you're looking for. ^_^

That's a good point! I'd love to be able to filter groups by their age requirement (Any, 16+, 18+, 21+). :)

Also, the reason why other forums are most likely not AO is because they remain public parts of the site. Even on the FLRP-AO there are limitations on the acceptable content and all actually mature content has to go into private areas that are labeled appropriately. Groups exist to allow this content because they can be flagged for content that goes beyond "I'm looking for RP involving <adult stuff>" and require a joining process, so you can't accidentally stumble onto adult stuff if you don't want to see it (even if you're an adult!).

It's perfectly okay to take the CSS from the official free RPR templates and modify them accordingly. :) Epic Templates are off-limits for that though, you need permission from the creator first.

I made a thread a while ago with the intention of providing ready-to-paste CSS coding for all official RPR templates so that people can work off of them as a base, but it's very time consuming and I never seem to have the energy to get to that. (Plus, character limitations make it a super tedious tasks to organize posts as the code is so long!) I think Kim has plans on the drawing board to give people an easy way to start editing existing CSS, or have a simpler user interface for beginners much like the edit tool for your profile?

NO, my apologies, I meant the templates that are free and available to everyone by default on RPR! I agree, having unlimited access to the custom templates would be very intrusive and insulting to the creators.

Is there a way to get access to the CSS of the free templates that I'm not aware of? :0

Also, do you have the link to that thread, or is it defunct?

I'll put this under a collapse tag because of length. The thread is pretty much useless right now as there are only a few templates. If you can't get the below sorted, let me know which template you want the code for and I can fix it up for you and PM it instead. :)

How to get the CSS code
If you pick a character and change their template to the one whose code you need, save and visit their profile. Right-click and choose 'View page source'.

In the top part of the code, find a LINK REL code that links to the stylesheet for that template. For example, my character Sinnice uses the 'Planet Earth' template, so I'm looking for this tidbit:
Code:
<LINK REL="stylesheet" HREF="https://www.rprepository.com/templates/2.0/stylesheets/planet-earth/style.css" TYPE="text/css">

If you click on the file, it opens up the CSS code: https://www.rprepository.com/templates/2.0/stylesheets/planet-earth/style.css

You can copy and paste the entire file into your custom template, but it needs a few tweaks.
  • First, remove this part at the top: @CHARSET "ISO-8859-1";
  • Second, if you want to keep all the images the template uses intact, you need to adjust the URLs. You can hit Ctrl+F and then search for the word 'url'. That will find all pieces of coding with image URLs, like this:
    Code:
    body { background: url(earth.jpg) no-repeat left 30px fixed; background-color: #000000; color: #D1D8D0; font-size: 16px; }
  • The images are located in the template specific folder, which in this case is https://www.rprepository.com/templates/2.0/stylesheets/planet-earth/ -- you can't access it, but you can change the earth.jpg part of the code to <a href="https://wwwr.rprepository.com/templates/2.0/stylesheets/planet-earth/earth.jpg">https://wwwr.rprepository.com/templates/2.0/stylesheets/planet-earth/earth.jpg</a>
  • Do this for every instance of an image in the coding.
  • Usually, you need to mark the checkbox for "Do not load the default CSS" to avoid the template messing up. Preview to see what it looks like, you might need to play around with the checkboxes until it looks okay.
  • The template might rely on specific fonts. Do a Ctrl+F search for font-family and look at the first fonts used. Select them from the fonts drop downs if they're in there (if not the template probably uses a very standard font).

At this point you should have the complete code of this template that is functional. You can edit it however you like. Keep in mind that each official template is mobile compatible so you need to tweak that code too make it looks good on smaller devices.

Hope that helps!

Thank you so much, Sanne! This worked like a charm!

Only issue I'm having is the alignment seems to be messed up from the original. Not sure how to fix it. :(

I just tried it myself. Besides the font, everything works just fine. Did you mark the first checkbox like I did here?

Also, if you have more issues with this please PM me? :) This is probably getting a bit off-topic!
Oh, dreaded CSS mis-alignments... there's a reason I haven't tried to branch out on that front yet.... =A= I wish you luck there.

Everything else above sounds really useful! I'm adding a +1 to searching for groups with an 18+ rule. I'd also love to have more say in what shows up from players and characters in my Home feed... it would make me less reluctant to friend people if I knew I had some control over how much I'd have to keep up with to feel like I was staying on top of my little nook of the community.

For the record, it was that checkbox! I got it working! Now back to the subject at hand...

I've actually been dinking around with this over the last few days, as I've been expanding the uses of categories! :D

This is already common practice, and one of the most popular uses for Epic membership CSS. :) Sanne's explanation was pretty thorough.

Not sure on this one... As I mentioned via PM, I had to make some pretty deep cuts to make everything work without the need for horizontal scrolling on mobile. Maybe some alternate view is possible.

Something along these lines will probably be tied into the categorization upgrades, down the line.

For the age requirements, groups you are not old enough to join are automatically excluded from your search results. We do currently allow searching based on the reasons that the group might be set to be 18+ (include/exclude sexuality, langauge or violence flags)

You can already search by genre/game keyword, or via the Find RP search tool, search for recently active groups that fall within your desired genre areas.

Groups that are tagged with Furcadia
Groups that are tagged with "vampire"
