Furcadia: The Second Dreaming

Posted by Kim on November 24, 2012, 4:12pm

Because so very many of you come to us from the game Furcadia, I want to make sure you're all aware of the amazing transformation that game is about to undergo; with your help. Furcadia has recently launched a kickstarter campaign to help them raise the money to update the game and become something even more amazing.

I owe Furcadia a special debt of gratitude. Their simple "Dragon Speak" scripts gently re-introduced me to the core concepts of programming. When my dad first started teaching me to program, I was 8 years old, and totally overwhelmed by the complexities of programming. As a teen, when I thought about programming, all I could remember was how frustrated I'd been as a small child. Through Furcadia, it was completely unintimidating to build my own maps and script my own games and adventures into them -- and from there, it wasn't so far a leap for me to pick up all that old schooling and forge ahead into the world of full-fledged programming, eventually producing our beloved RP Repository.

I know that many of you have made friends, spent hours, days and weeks RPing, and even learned new skills (or rekindled the love of old skills) on Furcadia. If you've got a special place in your heart for them, please consider checking out their kickstarter campaign.

Man, this is amazing! I never would have thought 100K would've been raised, especially at 11th hour, but it was done! Huzzah! *clappy hands applause*

Good job Furcadia. It will be interesting to see how this turns out :)

Huzzah! Furcadia made goal and is now looking to make some stretch goals. Thanks to those who pledged! :)

Weeeell, Sanne and Necrophagy pretty much hit what I was getting at, but I also see where Heimdall and Kim are coming from. Of course I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to what all goes on but it seems like some of this stuff could've already been implemented over the years. BUT, again, I don't know how they run things so it's not really my place to say~

I definitely do want to see the kickstarter succeed, though (which it looks like it's going to, yay!) I just don't think I can fling money at it until I'm making some again. :X

It can be disappointing when things don't turned out as planned, but I certainly understand that sometimes things just can't be made to fit on the budget, time or manpower you suddenly find yourself with. I've certainly let a few promised "deadlines" slide around here as well, when I didn't have the resources! So I'm definitely kicking some money in to support them, I know what having resources you can rely on (rather than planning on it then having it dry up) can do to a development schedule.

My friend donated quite a bit of money to this, and I would, too, if I had the money. But on the same hand, I'm with a lot of people (here and elsewhere) who have seen tons of stuff promised "soon", and then not seen the update for years on end. I'm a little leery of anything actually getting done, but I do hope it is.

Free gendered avatars would be amazing, as would free humans.

...And going by the kickstarter, it looks like they may make their 55k, if not today, then tomorrow.

I can understand where Goo is coming from! A lot of things didn't happen the way they were supposed to with DEP, even if it was due to time and money constraints. I personally am not happy with some things that occurred, so I'm choosing not to put money into this.

However, I do commend everyone who spares some money for this. :) It will be interesting to see where Furcadia goes to from here on, and I hope some of the things that bothered me will improve with this change as well.

Progress?... I think they've done pretty well putting out updates with zero income (other than general upkeep for servers and whatnot). There is progress. We got an insanely cool update earlier this year, even, and work on all these huge groundbreaking things is happening as we speak. The Kickstarter is just there to create the revenue so we can do it faster and better...

Do you mean iffy that they will reach their goal, or iffy that the work will be completed?

Oh look, I'm here from Furc too~

But anyway, yes, a bunch of the stuff on the kickstarter does seem pretty cool and DEFINITELY needed. I'm waiting until I see some actual progress before I think about chipping in, though. :v Still kinda iffy. I just..I've been here too long okay.

Ah, I wouldn't suppose it's easy to not know about the kickstarter, But I soo appreciated seeing this here anyway.
I've been with Furc since before 2007 (I don't have any for-sure records before then to say how long I've really been on) and found RPR through Furc.
I'd give everything if I had anything </3

Hey gang, just saw this on the game's system announcement:

50,012! Turkeys for everyone - more later!

Look at how close that is! That's absolutely amazing how much support the kickstarter is getting! <3

I can't say I blame them for being excited about this update, especially since this update could mean the difference between life or death for the game in coming years. I don't know, I'm just guessing, but I know it's been a long while since the game got an overhaul and times are a'changin. That said, I'm pretty sure there's a way to turn off the ads in game. :)

Furcadia has been my major creative outlet for years. I've been making friends and role paying with people from all over the world since I was 15 or 16. I donated just to be able to see the game finally get an update as well as to vote on some of the new content. :p I wish they'd stop posting all those ads in game though!

Furcadia was my first and is still my main roleplaying home. I'm very excited for this large update and can't wait to rp many many more years on it.

Furcadia is my other roleplaying home--in fact, the one through which I was first introduced to the RPR! It is a great game with some great concepts, and now it's on the way to getting the great updates it fully deserves to have, too, which is completely exciting.

If Kim endorses it, it must be good, right? 8-D

Wow, they're finally doing something to bring the site and service out of 1992? Outstanding!
