In all the years I've been here, I'm pretty sure I've only ever submitted one riddle, and that was just because a random idea ended up bouncing around in my head all day at work and I actually remembered to send it when I had the chance. 
Coming up with riddles in general is HARD, and RPR's EW riddles have that very specific setup.

The biggest thing is just finding oblique ways to guide people toward a weird fact/part of something you like, I think.
In the past couple of years I have resisted making riddles because it would all be really, REALLY specific things about protein folding and I don't really want to make people deal with that. '^v^

Gobbo and I were at her playschool this morning and the teacher had happened to put out a bin with water and ice cubes and a couple of little animal figures - a beluga, a seal, an orca, and one that I held up to Gobbo. “What’s this one?” “A WALRUS! ORP ORP ORP!”
They do the wildest ones... If you can figure out a riddle is theirs, that's already a clue itself. They're often about obscure history facts, like a clay tablet of some guy complaining about poor quality copper being sold to him, but they aren't just real world history.

Okay, that's fair, I don't want to make people have to learn how to use cutting edge bioinformatics tools or write in R, though. '^v^

But the bigger thing with Ilmarinen's riddles is how commonly it's IMPOSSIBLE to answer them before unlocking all the clues, because they come together to form a PATH to the answer; any clue by itself gets you nowhere.
