Welcome to the Role-players guild

Posted by Kim on September 29, 2017, 11:15am

You may have noticed a larger than normal influx of new members these past few weeks. Many of them come from a site called the role-player's guild.

Role-player's guild was a large forum site that welcomed a wide range of RP styles. Their method of creating RP profiles was quite different from ours, and from what we understand, a simpler process in some ways (with our freedom to do most anything you like comes the price of more confusion!) From all of our conversations with its old members, Role-player's guild was very well loved by its userbase of several thousand. Unfortunately, it has to close its doors in the coming weeks, and many of its members are landing here. We know that losing your RP home can be a heartbreaking experience, and want to do our best to ease the transition.

Welcome, erstwhile members of the Roleplayer's Guild! We were very sorry to hear that you were losing your previous home base, but we are very glad to have you with us now. On behalf of the RPR, may you have many wonderful and continuing adventures here!

You've been a very inquisitive and involved bunch and have sent me and the mods a raft of questions seeking clarifications, so we thought we'd make a public post to both introduce our existing community to you, and you to our norms here. :)

Before I take it away with some of the questions I've been asked, let me ask you: What was your favorite thing about Roleplayer's Guild before the announcement it was shutting down? What do you hope to find here that's the same? What do you hope is different? Inquiring admins (and communities) want to know! Please remember to keep your responses constructive! :)

What's different around here

As I understand it, on RPG, things were less segmented. You could see everything everyone else was doing, and the focus was on what was going on in all the various chats.

Here, we have a greater emphasis on your individual interests - your dashboard is filled with your characters and groups, and the homepage notifications are filled with things you've expressed a specific interest in, like what characters you've befriended are up to, or recent posts in forum topics you've subscribed to, rather than showing everything everyone is doing everywhere. This is partially because we have more players here, and it might be chaos to see everything! But it's also because of the wide range of RP genres and styles that we offer here, and we want to allow you to customize your experience to match your preferences. You can customize what your notifications show you here: Notification Settings

You may also find the following resources useful for your transition to the RPR:
By the by, you can use the "launch chat" button at the top and bottom of any forum topic, whether it's in a private group forum or our public RP forums, to turn your topic into a real time chat! There's also a link in the sidebar of private messages that will let you do the same.

What kind of RP will you find here?

discussion4.png
When it comes to styles and systems, I can't give you a single "this is how it is here!" answer.

Our goal is to provide the general tools so that people can do any kind of RP that they want. I think that's part of what sets us apart from most other RP sites, which are often built to work with a specific system (ex. D&D 3.5) or style (ex. paragraph freeform) or even setting (ex. Harry Potterverse).

We have the flexibility for much more than one type of RP, which is awesome, but also makes it a little harder for us to tell you exactly what will be expected from you in every RP that you join here! But most people will happily tell you their expectations or what they'll need from you if you express an interest in knowing more about a potential RP. :)

Finding one another

As of now, it doesn't appear that any of you have created a specific group on the RPR for former RPG members, but please feel free to comment on this news post if you'd like to identify yourself as a former RPG member looking for others to connect with!

You may also want to browse the introductions forum to find some old friends and make some new ones. :)

Some FAQ

This is a roundup of some questions we've received from new members arriving from RPG, and the answers that were given, in case others who were too shy to ask were wondering the same thing.

Are there rules and restrictions to what we can RP in private?
  • What you're sharing must be legal, and cannot encourage anyone to participate in illegal activities (For example, please don't encourage people to steal art, or, I don't know, sell drugs!)
  • It must not harass or defame anyone.
  • Must not be spam.
  • Everyone must be able to and has legally consented to receive/participate in adult-rated play (ex: minors can't consent to sexual content, so if you want to RP smut, make sure everyone you're playing with is in the same age category)
  • Does not involve dishonesty, ie lying to someone about being a site staff member or using anonymous characters to impersonate another player.
Other than those sorts of things, you're free to do almost anything you want in private. :)

Can we upload images to our character profiles that exceed a PG-13 rating?
Yes indeed you can! If you're uploading the image to a gallery widget, make sure you check the box for mature content - this will prevent people who don't consent to see that kind of thing from being surprised by it in their news feeds.

If you're embedding the image directly into the profile via BBCode, please mark the entire profile as containing mature content.

The place you can't do this for your character is as their icon, which is used to represent them all over the site, including in public areas.

Should I be nervous about being bullied here?
Making the RPR a safe and welcoming site is deeply important to me, and to all the moderators. I maintain that I did NOT spend seven years of my life doing a major labor of love just so that people can use it to harass, terrify or be unkind to one another. In fact, Be Nice is one of the first rules of the RPR, and one of the things you have to sign your name to as part of the forum pledge before you can participate in the public areas of the site. I spend at least as much time on moderation as I do programming, if not more, because the community's health and safety is the top priority at all times.

We also encourage the use of the "report" button/link any time you are uncomfortable or uncertain about something. Even if you aren't 100% sure it's against the rules, you're never bothering us by having us double check or making us aware that there's an odd pattern going on. Sometimes we have more social solutions in our back pockets - moderating isn't all about banning, after all!

Is there a limit to the number of character slots I can buy?
There isn't a practical limit on character slots once you start buying them. We have players with more than 200 characters on their accounts!

Can I just make a second account to get more slots?
Please don't; we understand the impulse, and we understand that not everyone has fun money on hand, but it's not just against the rules, it's greedy and hurts us.

Although the site is 100% free for you to access, there are real costs to running it. Super users who want to host a lot of characters are what helps us keep the lights on, and 10 is the number we have decided we are comfortable giving away to each person for free. This turns out to be 7 more slots than the average user ever needs - if you are a heavy user of our products, please help to support us by buying slots! :)

OMG there are so many buttons!! How do I get back to my characters to edit them?
Most of your own creations can be found via the Dashboard link. Just click the icon next to the character's name, and you'll be presented with all the editing options available to you. Here's tons more info on working with character profiles: Creating and editing character profiles

And for fun, here's some ideas on how to make them super awesome:
Creating character profiles that attract RP
Advanced profile prettification

Are there limits on how much text I can write?
Yes, but it's very, very hard to hit them. For example, let's look at profile text widgets: the limit there is 65,000 characters. Note that this is a count of letters, numbers, spaces and punctuation, not of words -- this is important, because "a" is a word but so is "honorificabilitudinitatibus"!

There's a limit of 10 widgets per profile page, so if you made all 10 of them text widgets, that would be 650,000 characters per profile page, or 150,000 more than are in the average 250-page book intended for consumption by adults.

Or, looked at another way, enough text to crash most browsers!

Do you have an app?
No RPG member has asked me this yet, but someone literally always does, so indulge me in throwing this in as as part of any well rounded RPR FAQ. ;)
See here for more on RPR apps

I hope this helps you adjust to using the RP Repository, but if you still have questions, you are welcome to ask myself or any member of the moderating team, or post your question publicly on the help forum.

I must say this is indeed a warm welcome, especially coming from a different RP site I should say I was most surprised.

What was my favorite thing about Roleplayer's Guild?

A: Well, honestly while a lot of people's are certainly going to be the infinite characters I honestly have no problem with 10. The one thing I will miss though was how easy it was to find other characters to roleplay with, I do understand the forum posting but I do highly doubt I will ever do one. It was nice that on the home page of RPG they had a list of both new characters and online characters, it made it easier to find people that I might want to roleplay with. That's really about it I do love making new characters on this site it's rather fun!

What do you hope is different?

A: Hmm, honestly I haven't a clue.

This was a very nice welcome to the site though, I thoroughly enjoyed it all and it did answer some questions I had about the site. I hope to enjoy this as much as I did RPG!

I've lost my RP home a few times, especially when MSN Groups shut down. So many friends lost!

Welcome everyone and I hope you have a wonderful time here. I'm down to chattering with new people!

Welcome to RPR, guys! I hope you love it here as much as we all do. :) I'm sorry that you're having to pick up and move, it can be pretty daunting.

With regards to building a profile for your character being confusing, it definitely can be to begin with, but I think that's largely because you're used to a totally different way of doing things. I promise it gets much, much easier - I've got a lot of characters (some private) and making RPR profiles for them is easy peasy now. My best suggestion is to snoop around a bit and see how other people are setting up their profiles for some ideas on how to set your own up. We also have heaps of people who make custom templates (they often post in the Art forum) who are very talented.

Hello LunarWitch here i to am a former member of RPG. Not the biggest fan of forums so probably will not ever post in them much. this one I felt I could make an exception for though. First off I too would like to thank you for the warm welcome.

As for the questions, what I liked about RPG before it was shutting down. What I liked most of all and to be honest already highly miss was the infinite characters. I've been roleplaying, and making up stories and characters for years so limiting it down to just 10 aside from paying the money for character slots, which I just could' t do in well in simple words impossible for me to do. So I was left to make mere category character pages, which over all is manageable just as said the infinite characters will be highly missed.

I also personally liked the option of having a dark theme on the site. I suffer from vision problems in real life, so therefore a lot of the brighter colors, especially white backgrounds, really bother and effect my eyes. For example the text boxes being white I will admit I will have to limit what I do at one time.

What I hope to find is very simple. The same thing I always look for when it comes to roleplaying. new friends and some fun and interesting stories/roleplayes. :D

As for differences. the one thing I am extremely happy for is the fact you can make various folders to organize messages. that was the one thing in my opinion RPG was lacking I had wished they had. So for me I am quite happy with the inbox functions.

I am an RPG refugee as well. Here are the answers to your questions.

What was your favorite thing about Roleplayer's Guild before the announcement it was shutting down?

Answer: I actually really liked the 'article' feature that someone else mentioned earlier. It allowed users to post a random 'starter', announcements (say if someone was taking a small hiatus or something), or even starters for each of your characters. Personally, I did the later because your articles that you wrote were available on your writers profile. That meant, if someone like my characters they could simply go to the starter provided to see if it worked for them. Worst case, they got a sample of my writing.

What do you hope to find here that's the same?

Answer: Honestly.... a RP site is only as good as it's community. You can have the best site, with all the best features and if you don't have a good community then it's all for nothing. So, I have high hopes that the community here is great. I made quite a few friends from RPG and had several great stories, I'd like to have that here as well.

What do you hope is different?

Answer: There was a lot of staff issues on RPG and A LOT of staff messages constantly about something or another. Honestly, that kind of annoyed me. I dealt with it because overall I liked the site, but I like that the staff here does not do that. I also disliked all the lagging that was involved with RPG and am hoping I do not run into that here. It seemed like at certain times the site was bogged down and wouldn't load or would take forever to load. That was also a huge inconvenience.

Overall, I am really liking RPR. Of course, it's not RPG and at first I'd find myself frustrated with or without certain features. However, like any home you'd move into, it just takes time to get adjusted. One thing I really love about this site is the amazing messaging system. Since I mostly RP privately in messages, it's a huge plus for me to have an inbox that I can separate OOC, SL discussions, and roleplays. I love how organized that makes things for me.

Of all the things you said one thing called to me...there is a forum for random banter, a public forum much like the one you enjoyed on your home site. It's the smalltalk forum And here's a link~!

@CelticEmpress
There are community wide contests! On the site's anniversary there is a massive (I want to say party) event called Epic week, there are several different contests from the Doubutt game to the Dice roll tombola which offers both physical prizes as well as things only obtainable on RPR (as well as unique items for purchase!) As for writing contests I believe there is one of those at the end of Epic week and every friday there is a writing prompt to help get creativity going~!

Godfrog here, and former RPG member! "Meh"

What was your favorite thing about Roleplayer's Guild before the announcement it was shutting down?

A: Well not to sound like a copycat but just like Orochi I enjoyed the make as many characters as you want. Now obviously with having ten slots that is very limiting to some but one thing we can do is make each character slot a multi-character page and that helps ones like me that really don't have the available extra funds to truly support such an nice and welcoming site. I'll admit I was very hesitant when Orochi told me about this place, but I will give you guys that you are very organized and the system is easy for anyone to understand once you realize you don't have to fill out every little box. lolz.

What do you hope to find here that's the same?

A: I hope to meet great friends and have long term rps that develop my characters so that I may use them in my stories that I write. I also am one t hat misses the writing contest that rpg had every month and had been REALLY looking forward to the October one. It's such a shame because I'm sure I'm not the only one.

What do you hope is different?

A: Well I love the folders thing you guys have it's something I've always wanted to be able to organize my rps by who I'm rping with. I can't think of much else right now but I am glad that I gave this place a chance, I can only say I've had nothing but a positive experience here so far.

Thank you for welcoming us all to rpr and I do hope this is a long term thing and not a short term thing as rpg will be missed but ultimately at the end of the day it's closing and not much we could do about it so had to scurry to find a new site. I shout out to Orochi as I believe they were one of the first ones to find out about you guys. Sincerly, Godfrog.

Thank you so much for the absolutely warm welcome. Over the past few days I've become more and more at home here. It's a little like having to walk out of a storm after your house fell apart and find your neighbor will let you in despite being drenched from the rain. It's lovely, cozy, and getting the wet clothes off and handed some new fuzzy pajamas is how it's been feeling for me.

What was your favorite thing about Roleplayer's Guild before the announcement it was shutting down?

My favorite part of the system was universe building. It's a bit like your group system, but also quite a bit different. It was just neatly organized in a way that I liked but it also still lacked a few things too.

What do you hope to find here that's the same? What do you hope is different?
I'm hoping my drive will be the same, I'll be honest with you.

I'm hoping for the difference of your staff system being far better than RPG. There were a few choice staff members that I liked a lot, but the owner has some serious growing to do. As for RPR I've seen nothing but positive outcomes from the staff. I'll admit I've peeked through where the staff have dropped answered to questions from new and older members.

I'm looking forward to writing on this site, and I'm thrilled to see so many of my friends actually being interested in a forum. I started on IM back in the days of MSN and AOL chat rooms before jumping to forums and loving the life of writing. Thank you greeting the refugees of RPG the way you have.

Hello everyone,

Kim thank you for posting this. It's wonderful!

What will I miss most about RPG? The community wide contests, and seeing what others do become so prevalent. The writing contests were wonderful, people who thought they were horrible writers would even try and some actually won. It was very encouraging as a community to have so many to offer help via articles and also contests.

To answer one of the questions about the RPG Banner, it was created as part of a site wide contest back when the site first was getting up and running. RPG ended up with several user created banners. RPG was known for site contests among users; writing, badges to color our names, and also the banners.

I think we all will miss RPG, but I know we are all looking forward to the future.

Again Kim thank you for posting this, you have my deepest appreciation. Thank you for giving a lot of us a new home.

Wow, as an avid and forefront member of the RPG community and member of the user engagement team on RPG staff, I definitely didn't expect to be heartily welcome to the site in such a way. Thank you!

As for your questions

1. What my favorite thing about RPG before the shut down. Well, I'm gonna be perfectly frank with you: Infinite Characters.

RPG is the only site I've ever been on that allowed for an infinite number of character profiles. I was a particular abuser of this with probably well over 200 character profiles. These allowed me to keep the maximum potential of roleplays and freedom that I desired for roleplays and roleplaying, and I didn't feel I had to pick and choose between characters I wanted to portray and ones I felt I would have to leave out.

That said, I'm under no pretentions your current system will change just for us. The additional characters are how you make money, and financial problems were one of the driving factors that eventually lead to the site's close.

If I were to put REASONABLE things I miss, well...

The ability to mark my messages unread from inside the thread (rather than exiting and finding the message I just opened to mark unread), and... articles.

Articles were the ability to write down something in a public area that could simply get your thoughts out. You could write an in canon story, give your thoughts on a certain subject of roleplay, or just drop how you're doing in life. I, for one, used them to put out topics about RP quite often. As a member of the community, I made it a habit to write positive and helpful articles, such as the dos and don'ts of erotica roleplay, how to make a believable character, and how to avoid purple prose. I also had stories that I wrote, as well as extended lore to verses I was either a part of or created.

Oh, one final thing I'll miss that's not hear yet is a cohesive way to view characters. On RPG, the dashboard had 2 areas for immediate character viewing. The top bracket was 12 slots of online characters displayed at random. If you refreshed the page, it showed 12 new random characters. The second bracket showed the absolute newest that had been made so far. I must say that if there's anything lacking on the site, it's the ease of use for finding individuals without sending out a "LFRP" article (which I will get to in a second).

What do I hope is the same?

After being on the site for a few days, I already have a decent look around at what I like. I chose this site as my stop because you do, in fact allow for more characters. It may not be infinite, but it does allow my freedom and flexibility more than "You get 1!".

I'm also deeply comfortable with the very friendly community so far, as well as the message system that's intrinsic and robust. I'm also glad that I don't have to send a friend request to contact someone.

Finally, the staff here has seemed very friendly so far. I came from ani before RPG, and let me just say ani's deplorable staff were the reason I was even looking for RPG to begin with.

What do I expect to be different?

You do a lot that's BETTER than RPG. RPG didn't have a friend system to begin with, and here it's a friend system that's actually practical. It's nice to be able to keep up with people without having to get external info about them.

Furthermore, it's nice to be able to post images in messages again, a feature that Villanite (the site creator) never got around to adding.

Your forum system is also vastly improved compared to the practically non-existent system we had at RPG. Our Looking for Roleplay thread system was honestly an afterthought by the site creator after people kept using the article system to send out notices they were looking for roleplay. This is definitely a great thing given how difficult it is to find members individually via the browse character system.

Summarily...

You guys are doing a great job. I have a few nitpicks, but I'm really looking this so far, especially that I was reached out towards!

So, welcome to all the Roleplayers shipping our way! I know what it's like to loose a long beloved place of cooperative creative writing!

Hope you enjoy yourselves here! It is daunting at first, trust me, I was thrown way off at first and didn't bother for a long time. However, when you get used to it, it's not that bad. Do wish some of the features were free (like customizing profiles with css) but meh. I can work with what's given and they have some pretty cool free templates.

THAT IN MIND, I was wondering who made the Roleplayers Guild banner that's on this news post? Part of me wouldn't mind inquiring about a private name banner.

RPG roleplayer here hello

The site was confusing, may just make a new account if possible.

The profile building is very confusing. Fellow friends are debating on giving this a try or not, and I've been leaning left and right on whether I want to actually or not. Not to sound rude, I just worked on a profile... wrote it all out, had it all finalized and found out it completely disappeared and I can't even figure out how to work it, and that's why.

Also, to change a username is costs $10?????????????
