Atl had trouble with learning, but they were slowly making progress.
Unfortunately, a handler showed up and immediately ended the impromptu tutoring session, demanded that Alex stop distracting the exhibit and leave.

Alex noded in understanding and gave a secretive wink at Atl before departing.

Alex could hear the handler scolding the mermaid as he left. He was supposed to be entertaining aquarium guests, not wasting time like this!

"Why do people treat beautiful creatures like slaves."
He mutters allowed as he exits.

By now, Jamie had given up on her "In and out in one hour" statement. She was exploring forbidden areas in the aquarium, and currently she was making her way through the air vents. It was her way of spicing up the boring aquarium visit. She overheard Atl being scolded, and curiously peeked through the vent she had come to, observing the situation.

"When you're up here wasting time, there are guests down below, disappointed they didnt see you. They're going to leave the aquarium disappointed, and disappointed guests means less money for the aquarium. Less money for the aquarium means there's not enough to upkeep such a large tank for you. And that means you'd be moved to a smaller tank. Understand?"
After a long moment, he gave a small nod.
"Do you understand?" The handler repeated.
"...yes..."
"Good. Now there are guests waiting for you. Get down there."

Jamie glared at the trainer from in the vent. That kid was a mermaid! He shouldn't be cooped up in an aquarium! She growled a bit out of anger. She rarely felt sorry for people, but even if that kid was only part human, he still deserved freedom.

Atl slipped back under the water, reluctantly making his way back down to the viewing stage. ...He'd just get in even more trouble if he didn't start swimming around where guests could see him...

Jamie wanted to punch the trainer and shove them into the tank. Her rage was currently directed towards the fact that Atl was in confinement. How long has he been there? A month? A year? Longer? Her anger was causing her to constantly growl. It was clearly audible.

The handler glanced up when he noticed the noise, frowning. What in the world was that?

Jamie noticed she was making noise and stopped when she saw the handler look her way. She slapped her hand over her mouth. She wasn't certain what would happen next, but she sure wasn't afraid.

After a moment, he shook his head, chalking the noise up to the crappy ventilation system the aquarium had. He walked away, now that Atl was back down below and behaving again.

Jamie let out a loud laugh, assuming she was safe. Fooling the handler had been fun.

The handler spotted her that time. "Get out of there before I call security!" He ordered.

Jamie only laughed and crawled away through the vents.

The handler wanted to go after her, but he knew there was no way to track where she went. Instead, he went to go report what had happened.

Jamie soon returned, being careful to be silent.

From her perch above the tank, she could just make out the mermaid's distorted form beneath the surface.

Jamie quietly watched Atl.

The mermaid lazily swam around the tank in view of the guests, doing loops and corkscrews occasionally. He was doing his best to behave and show off, not wanting to be yelled at again.
