Discord has gained a lot of popularity, and I'm fond of the platform personally (though I'm a bit biased, I've been there since the beginning.)

Has anyone used it for RP? How'd that go?

Easily making group chats and channels to keep IC and OOC separate is nice, and I think it's popular with a few big groups here.

I've done several rp's on discord before and it's pretty cool. Typically a bit faster than on here. I've got a general "Whatever you wanna do" type RP Discord Server that I run with a friend, if you're interested in joining. It's not real active though.

I like discord and I'd definitely use it for RP if I knew how to find RP rooms, lol.

My only complaint is that there doesn't seem to be anywhere to link character profiles. You could post your links at the start of the RP, but scrolling up for ages just to find someone's profile seems like a pain in the butt. How do you guys get around that?

To post character profiles you could create a channel specifically for that. You could have one for OOC chatter or separating different roleplays and offshoots.

I think Discord is very useful for roleplay, aside from the lack of dice, which I rarely use much anyway. Or maybe I’ve just missed that feature, since I have not actively looked for one.

Pinning messages to the top of a channel is useful, and character profiles, lore, rules and such can go there.

Some of the roleplays I’ve been in on Discord have worked out, others have not, about the same as on RPR. I’ve roleplayed in servers a lot more than one on one in Discord, though.

Well, I see Discord as more of an OOC contact platform/gamer chat platform rather than a RP platform, and that's how I primarily use it: OOC talk with people who have my handle and possible meetups via servers when playing some MMOs.

I think it'd also work as a pretty good networking platform for artists/creators who love giving teasers on their projects and stuff because of how easy it is to organize members, give updates, etc..

However, I've tried RPing on Discord once with a friend or two, but it felt a bit messy to me despite having the edit option always at your fingertips. I prefer a smoother-feeling platform that has more RP-friendly customization and options. That's why I love RPR so much.

I've just joined, like last two weeks and I've done a surprising amount of RP, through private message and channels set up for it. I think it's really useful, especially when paired with something like RPR where you can have your character profiles and then just RP.

I'll probably consider giving it a shot if I can find some willing participants, in any case.

Discord is a useful social app that combines chat and (group) voice sessions pretty darn well. I use it to play D&D with friends across the globe.

For actual RP it seems cumbersome to me. The UI isn't designed for that purpose so you're constantly dealing with having to find workarounds to problems (like storing character profiles). It's not intuitive for RP, its intended purpose is to allow for easy communication between gamers through voice and text chat while they're gaming, including to record multiplayer sessions for Let's Plays.

For some people dealing with the workarounds isn't an issue, for others it takes a lot of energy that would otherwise be better spent in actual roleplays. You'll have to decide for yourself whether or not it's worth it to you!

I personally really use Discord often for roleplaying for a while now and the only thing I can complain about is the post limit of 2000 characters per message so I often need to split up roleplay posts in several messages
But of course as any platform you first need to adjust to what's there and what's not. I also miss the possibility to choose profile picture for each server without having to change the actual one.

While I have to agree with most of the discourse here. I RP intermittently on Discord, but I find myself coming back to other settings for RP. Even when using workarounds, it's not a perfect system (though I do like that it's the only platform I know of that lets me use Markdown instead of BBCode).

The main drawback that can't be truly fixed is the word limit. True, places like Furcadia have them too (and theirs is even smaller than Discords!) but on top of all the duct tape fixes one already has to do via bots, it can make playing there even harder.

I find myself questioning whether it's worth trying, the more I read here.

I've personally had very bad experiences when I tried Discord, and I've tried twice. I've run into way too many people on there that want to RP over voice chat and this is something I cannot do. I've been screamed at and called everything in the book and honestly, I do not like it. If I were to get involved in a RP, I'd rather it be right here on RPR, where my profile is accessable with every one of my posts and people can post at their own pace. I can be active every day here and can talk to people that love me, where on discord if I run into a god forsaken troll I have to leave because everyone else follows suit. One of these days I'm going to run into one of the people that have been screaming sladerous profanity at me on Discord and I'm going to hurt them. I didn't even have near that horrible of drama on Furcadia, and trust me, on there it was bad. On RPR, I feel a whole lot safer and like I said, I have made friends on this site that I love to death and back and that love me just as much in return.

I find Discord more useful for OOC interaction/discussion than IC. Granted, my RP style is a muuch slower pace, usually paragraphs long, so forum posts/PM/online documents are more the medium I prefer.

I, personally, do not recommend using Discord as a way of finding people to RP with (in the sense that you join servers full of strangers wanting to RP). Reason being: you can run into all sorts on servers, especially large servers with probably hundreds of members you have no control over and whose admins are probably overwhelmed as it is.

But yeah, if you need to talk one-on-one or to a relatively small group about plotting without the delay of a forum, Discord's a good choice.

I use Discord more as an instant messaging system for OOC chatter, and as it is advertised, for gaming overlay to stay in connection. That being said however, I have used it for roleplay be it in a self made server, which I find extremely useful, or in groups.

A nice function within Discord is that you can make as many servers as you like, and when it comes to rp partners who I am friends with and talk to quite frequently, I can make a server strictly for our roleplays, easily keeping our OOC separate. And in the case of having multiple roleplays with the same person, I can make 'rooms' within that server to separate all the separate threads we have going.

The only thing I can say is that for character profiles, I personally enjoy having themes and making them 'jazzed' up. Visual aesthetic can be a huge thing, not only for myself, but for others as well, so perhaps, as others have stated, having a room for profile links on Discord can prove useful.

As a means of communication? It’s amazing. It’s nice to keep in contact with people and see what’s happening. On top of that, I can organize my OOC groups far better than anywhere else, as well as use it to keep track of my replies sent out and whatnot.

As a means to rp? Eeeeh, the 2,000 text character limit kills it for me. On top of which, it’s not organized for doing replies if you do your replies in an oldest first fashion. On top of that, at least on my end, there’s nothing that Discord offers for rp that RPR doesn’t offer and more.

I like it for group role plays and general group discussions. For purer role play it just wouldn't work for me.
Granted, being able to organize and monitor group rps is easy and I am able to see them all.
Downside is you can't really have multiple people listed on one account.
You can find a happy medium but to use it for pure role play would be a disaster in my eyes.

In my experience, Discord is used more by people who enjoy active play. I could be wrong with this impression, but it's just something I've observed.

With Discord, you can organize your different threads into different channels and keep things organized okay in my opinion, and create links for character profiles. You can use pictures in both mediums as well. But seeing as RPR is built for roleplay, I can see why people would prefer RPR. I've found Discord to be a pretty smooth roleplaying experience for the most part.

I will roleplay on either Discord or RPR and don't have much of a preference.

I solely use Discord to connect with my friends in specific groups. On the other hand, it was a blast joining other servers and meeting new folks, or meet the same folks in different communities.

At one point, I also love the channel format to sort off into "worlds" or "locations" for my RPs... Which that did not excecute well because my ideas are just to big for me and my friends, who are very, VERY busy adults. Its to overwhelming.

So for RP wise, not sure if the 2k charater limit throws novelas up, but I did my best to send them in a few paragraphs at a time. So in short I have some successful RPs as of recent date.
