Forums » Smalltalk » Where did you start roleplaying?

I started in 1995 AOL. Spent many years in imvu came here for the frist time in 2013 ish
Does anyone remember Active Worlds?
I’d say there was less RP and more Map Exploration for me.
Yahoo chat. Drael and Mathius were my very first OCs that belonged to their own lore that I and five others built together.
I thought to say mine was Zero Lucien.
As a creative writer/roleplayer, I have been around (constantly) a longgg time, (like since AOL Hell Daze at the Rhydin Inn, Medieval Tavern, or the plethora of other chatrooms.
“Real life has taught me that in the adult world, fate is chaotic and ambiguous.
Strategies for success are subjective.
But in the world of Creative Fiction, at least there is role-playing,
where we are in control, and our characters...
wander through places of danger, their destinies,
superficially, within our grasp.”

Joining the gang who started RP on Neopets! XD I started when I was around 12? It's also how I learned English!
I started writing stories with my best friend when we were 11. We had notebooks and wrote out characters and scenes. They moved away and we went online and started in with email exchanges with them and a couple of our high school friends before we joined a forum called 'Storytime'. It never was big, and there were maybe a dozen people there at its height. I tried looking for it on the Wayback Machine but couldn't find it. I did some Middle-earth roleplaying on Arwen Undomiel com around the time the Hobbit movies came out, but the scene was dying out when I got there. I put Rp and writing on the shelf after graduation in 2012, and it was 2021 when I returned to as a part of my recovery (long story). I registered to a lot of sites then, including this one. A number of those sites have since closed down (Black Dahlia and Creative Freedom recently), but it was this one that stuck with me.
It was around 1984. I was in the third grade and all of my friends had an older brother. One of them had some D&D stuff from the 70s and we found it and combine it with a board game called The Dark Tower. We had no idea what we were doing and it all got taken up as the Satanic Panic scare reached its height.

From there, we got into this choose your own adventure type series called "Be An Interplanetary Spy". They were those kinds of books where you solved puzzles and made choices and turned to a particular page based on what you chose. We turned that into a sort of live action RP mixed loosely with a table top. We would use our toys to play out certain aspects of the game and acted other parts out.

I got back into D&D in junior high when they re-issued and updated the original basic D&D game and had a starter board game and released a series of Gazetteers starting with a boxset that fleshed out a new game world and worked in some of the old modules from the Gygax area of the game back in the 70s.

My real first table top gaming actually started in 1990 when I started high school. I met some friends my freshman year who were also interested in D&D. That was when second edition AD&D came out and I joined my first group that lasted in one form or another from high school into early college.

As for play by posting, I began branching out and doing slice of life and modern type games that were more story based in the early 2000s using Yahoo Groups. I've been active in play by post RPs for a little over 20 years now.

Fun fact: I rebooted one of my games from around 2003 here on RPR when I joined in 2018 and it is still going.
I started on Gaiaonline around 2010. I was late to the scene. When I first attempted to post, I remembered being so jittery and nervous because, you know, what if it’s bad? Getting my first reply was the most wonderful feeling.

I did a lot of rp with wolves at first. It was a spin off of Warriorcats and I got addicted fast. Eventually the trend slowly died out and I moved on to actually trying for a person OC.

Reguardless, I have been writing ever since. I took a break (I thought I was done writing) the last few years, but I came back due to a friend. They made a group and it was right up my alley. So I’ve been active again the last year.
Dark Greetings :)

I don't recall the exact date; however, it was a long time ago( around 15-20 years ago). Back then, I didn't know much about the roleplay sites, and while surfing on the internet, I accidentally came across a website called ( I am not sure I am allowed to name it), and registered. For a while, it was great; however, because of some mean users, I lost my interest there... Then I found another one, however, it had a kind of strange policy, they read everything... had supervisors to monitor the users all the time, indicating that your story has to be 60 percent plot, and 40 percent smut, and they had strange rules for this... and I got bored and then found RP and since then this is the only roleplaying site I have been active, and by all means I love it here :)

--- My life has always been about vampires and darkness, so my characters are dark and exceedingly powerful (my vampires). I also use all sorts of undead, demons, and magical beings too... my best quality is writing :) So roleplaying is my passion.
[*] I started around 16 years old on Goodreads. Back then, I had tons of time to read physical books I used (and still use the app) to track my books. They have this feature to join groups, and a friend I met on there introduced me to roleplay groups. After those groups died, I needed a new place. Later, I ended up on Instagram, Roleplayme, Amino, and one other site for a long time. That was until about 2019 when I found this site and haven't really used the other sites in a while. I did try Discord roelplay last year, and I don't like it as much. I mostly stick here.

I stick around here because I've made the most friends and have had the best long-lasting stories on rpr. My longest is 5 almost 6 years.
I started in early 2000s - I think 2001-2004, because my grandmother was still alive at the time - with ElfQuest based RPs ("holts") on YahooGroups. At first I was SUPER bad at writing in english, lol - I'd never written anything fictional at all and my knowledge of eglish was limited to my hating it at school. But I wanted to learn and RPs, along with *sighs* Harry Potter books, which I don't like anymore these days, but which were big on me at that time, helped me become more and more fluent in the language.

In the following years I'd play almostexclusively fantasy, to the point of burning myself out on it. Other than YahooGroup, more popular, my favorite platforms were also Ezboard (my very first experience with forums!) And Bravenet Forun which was very fun.

I had a brief experience with italian RP where me and an italian friend were writing HP fanfictions and would at times pretend to be our characters conversing, but it was more casual IC chit-chat than true RP. Then, toward mid 2010s, I was for a short time in a Farthing Wood RP on a forum bullettin board whose name I completely forgot. Vbullettin, maybe? I honestly have no idea anymore ._.

Anyhow, before that, circa 2009, I also joined the second community I'd play in for the longest time; the WALL-E Forum. It wasn't RP specific but had a RP subforum. We started with just one thread set 20+ years after the events of the movie, but soon the RP grew to encompass past present and future, AUs, timetravels, crossovers and soon I had something like 45357689537 characters - kidding but not THAT much kidding, I have "OC Flu" and aint ashamed of it ;) Most of my RPR brainchildren originate from then.

Even if WALL-E Forum itself only lasted a few years, the close knit community of us "core" RPers stuck together, and we continued to work on our characters fir well over 10 years. Then we fell apart due to nasty episode of bullying at my expense and for a while I was so disheartened I gave up on RPs entirely... until I found RPR!

At first I thought no one would want to play with me because my first rooster of four- Cris, Darius, Curly and Leonard - had been the "least liked" by the old crew. They ended up being some of the OCs I have since RPed most!🥰 🥹 RPR and especially CrystalDisc's Auroverse group on here were my "come home" rekindling of the love for RP and fiction writing. About the same time I also discovered Discord on the Auroverse server, and after learning the ropes I'd roleplay there too.

I started roleplaying in 2013 on RolePlayer.me . A year before that, I was on a site called SiteModel.net and I didn’t know what roleplaying was when I first started. Eventually, I got the hang of it.

I’ve roleplayed on many different sites that have the MySpace 1.0 layout under many different characters. Being on the autism spectrum, it’s very difficult for me to decide on a set character to play as my special interests change over time. Unfortunately, RolePlayer.me and RolePlay.me have gotten worse as more and more people aren’t using those sites like they used to be. These days, it’s all about popularity like how it is on social media where you feel like you have to compete to get so many likes and followers in order to feel popular. I pray this site is not like that because I’ve gotten tired of these Tumblr hate blogs going around where people anonymously talk crap about certain roleplayers behind their back and spread rumors and lies about them with no visible proof. I’ve also gotten tired of seeing pages being created where they do the same exact thing like they do on these Tumblr hate blogs. It’s like we’re in middle school all over again and nobody deserves to go through that.

Anyway, this is the third time I’ve returned to RP Repository. After what I went through on RolePlayer.me over these past few years, I’ve decided that I’m going to stick to being on RP Repository and hope I can find some good writing partners.
What a great question! It made me take a trip down memory lane. I'd actually nearly forgot. I was introduced to rp by a friend in high school (2010-ish Double checked the math! It was 2011). We rp'd through Google Hangouts (saw that mentioned before!). I soon found myself wanting more stories and replies and joined RPG (I'm pretty sure that stood for Roleplaying Guild). The site was shut down not too long after I joined- I think a few months but really don't remember at this point. Before it was gone for good, I started looking for a new rp site. RPR was towards the top of my Goggle search, if not the top, so I decided to give it a shot. I was nervous about starting over, but some of the friends I'd made on RPG also came to RPR, so all's well that ends well. I haven't branched out from RPR. It just has such good vibes. Even when I was on my 5-year hiatus, I left my subscription going in hopes of contributing in some small way :) That lasted until I lost my debit card and had to order a new one. Seems to be an almost yearly thing, tbh ^^;
I think I started on Furcadia when I was about 15 or 16 years old.

I may have tried a little on Neopets when I was running a themed guild. But Furcadia was the bulk of my exploring roleplay to write.
Oh man I'm not sure I'd be able to pinpoint a specific year. Maybe 2016-2019? I was still in high school and joined this site called gaiaonline. I'd stumbled upon it by accident, but it seemed cool.

There was an insane amount of RP forums there, each dedicated to a niche interest. I'd tried to join a few, but these were RPs that had been going on for YEARS, and I'd found that the other RPers weren't particularly helpful in letting me integrate. I gave up and founded my own forum, which actually led to me meeting a really cool and experienced RPer, from whom I learnt a lot from. We even became good friends until she got kicked off of her account for no reason and her interest in the site kind of petered out. Sometimes, I still wonder how she's doing.
It's crazy to think about it but I feel like I've always roleplayed in one way or another, but as I grew up I found different platforms and styles of play.

It started with make-believe with friends when I was in pre-school. To giving my cars, stuffed animals, and legos names and personalities as I played alone. To trying to play dnd with my brother when I was 7-ish without any of the books and no dice. To video games being kind of a platform to play through the eyes of a character. To pursuing worldbuilding and creative writing as a hobby...
Oh boy, The earliest places I remember getting into this hobby that followed me well into my adulthood is a toss up between two. A old roleplay chat site called "Teenchat" I dont know if its still the same platform, i wouldnt be surprised if thats been long dead. And GaiaOnline. That was so sooo long ago too.
Wheel Of Time Maniacs or something like that.

My first prompt/thread was called 'Circling Birds' a reference to the crows in the air during the aftermath of a battle.

Sheesh, that was like 2003 😳😳😭😭
Started back on Yahoo Messenger. It was something to really help me with my story ideas. I bounced between that, AOL and teenspot. I hated when messenger got bogged down with bots but teenspot's roleplay chat room was always open and I made some really good friends there. Some that I kept for years until we lost touch. That transitioned into RP Haven, where I've been doing live RP for over a decade.
